What would be more helpful to me, a 1980 Corvette assembly manual or a 1980 Corvette shop manual??

I agree get both. The Assembly Manual is the cheaper of the two books. You can find them on Ebay or aftermarket suppliers between $20 to $24, the GM Shop Manual is bit more expensive, anywhere from $35 ~ $75 depending on how bad someone wants it (Ebay). I'll look and see if I can find an old thread that gave some websites to buy GM Shop Manuals..
