I have an 86 C4 L98 and I have heard that by passing the throttle body coolant hose that it would give me a little more performance. Also cutting the screen out of the mass air flow sensor helps. Has anyone tried these mods and do they work or should I leave well enough alone. Thanks for any info.....Bob Yates

the TB bypass helps reduce heat, and is probably good for a real gain of no more than 5HP (probably more like 1-2HP). the MAF screens can be removed as well for a couple HP gain, but you have to be VERY careful when removing them. If you damage the MAF, you will have to spend about $300 to buy a new one.

I did the throttle bypass a few months ago. Its good to reduce the heat around the throttle, but I didn't feel any performance difference.

This has been around a few times and the opinions are all over. Mine is that the impact is minimal, due to the VERY short time the air is passing through.

Recently, a member stated he had found bugs in his MAF screen, so atop the delicate nature and possible expense, then the marginal change, You choose.

Improperly sealed air filter box, or a torn filter. Something ain't right if there's bugs in the MAF. ;)

To be really honest with you, your wasting your time!!!!! UNLESS, You drive around at FULL THROTTLE ALL THE TIME!!!!! Theres lots of JUNK being marketed today that does NOTHING but lighten YOUR wallet. Now, if you buy enough of this forementioned JUNK,YOUR wallet will be much lighter& your performance will increase EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY. Just my .02 worth!!:w

A big vette wave to all......I think I'll let a sleeping dog lye and look else where for a little more go faster.... I don't know alot about TPI so I guess I'll buy a book on the subject. Thanks again to all....I know you guys saved me from making a boo boo on my vette......Bob Yates

I had little pieces of bugs and stuff on my screen. Enough to make me want to keep the screen in. I found the clamp that connects the corrugated air duct to the air inlet box was not surrounding the duct underneath so there was a small gap there. I by-passed the TB. I wouldn't be able to notice a small difference like that and I don't have any previous performance numbers to compare with. All I know is it runs great!!!

Hey, Bob.

Do you have the factory manual for your dar; the one by Helm? There's a lot of good information about the TPI plus all else right there! It can take a bit of digging and familiarization with the book, but can pay for itself time and again.

It ain't the cheapest book, but heck, you could be me and need three of them for a modded car! :w

Hey Whalepirot.....I have that manual. It's good but it doesn't show any mods to the TPI to improve performance...... I am now going to put true dual exhaust on and remove the A.I.R. pump and replace the crank pulley. On my last vette that made a big difference. I've got to replace my valve guide seals so while I'm doing that I'll replace the rocker arms with rollers. These mods will kick up so dust for sure......Bob Yates
