How many of you out there are running with no muffler's and replaced the center cat/resonater with straight pipes out the back with gutted pre cats?
Is it to loud for you? or the noisier the better?
What about performence wise? better? worse?
Well me personaly, I like the noise and at fthe first time driving it, I thought that I definately made a mistake on doing this to my car because of the fact that I had no kind of low end.....none, but soon after running around town and on the freeway at speeds from 1 mph to a quick 110 mph, I noticed that it was definatly running much better the it had at first, the computer was begining to learn the mod or what ever you decide to call it.
One important fact that I wanted to make sure that I passed on to all you readers and none readers out there was that on my "instant" miles per hour gadge, it went from an average (driving on pretty much level roads) of 25 mpg to 34 mpg and some times up to 41 mpg!!! yes I know!! what kind of "Pakalolo" have I got into to make me see this strange and unusual vision that I'm claiming to have witinessed?! none! I dont touch the stuff!! it's for real!! 100% real fact, of course not a scientific study or anything like that, just what I call a little........................"Hawaiiantiffic" study, thats pretty much it my friend's.

Years ago I had straight pipes with SUPER TRAPPS on the 85. I could pull the rear plate, and go straight pipes. It was LOUD!!!!!

It was fun too.

30+ mpg?

Wow! That's pretty impressive.

Oh man!! I bet! you have more mods done to your car then I do mine, I would guess it would be loud!!!:D

Yep, and with the adjustable pressure regulator, I could crank up the PSI on the fuel, set the timing back a tad, and blow flames out the straight pipes on deaccleration. My buds got the biggest kick out of it.

just a question, I know it is slightly off topic,(sorry)

but is increasing the fuel PSI and setting the timing back, bad for an engine?? I realize it is for short periods of time but does it hurt and engine?

also, how hard is it to setup whatever is needed to do that?

Where were you when I asked about SuperTrapps a few months ago? Regardless, were they really tunable to be quiet enough for you? Was there a noticeable power difference between a few plates, lots of plates, and no plates/no cap? How was resonance? Did you still have the OEM resonator?

Depends on what your trying to do my freind, it'll run, I supose a litttle rich, the computer will do what ever it can to addjust it's self, rich is better then lean, of course it goes back to the question on what it is your trying to accomplish?

They were the coolest exhaust pipes I have ever had. They were not the high dollar stainless steel kind, so they were starting to look rough. I had bought them from a friend of mine that had them on his trans am for several years before I got them.

Yes, you could feel a seat of the pants difference in adding/subtacting plates.

The biggest pain...it took 20 minutes or more to remove and install all the screws when making adjustments.

Is it bad to run a car rich...etc. for giggles and grins...YES. but....you only live once.

69MyWay,
Thanks. I had STs on a bike. I had always imagined that they would be good on a Vette. The new tapered SS models would look really good in place of C4 mufflers. Take care of that C4!

Hey guys i did a similiar mod on my 86 vette, where i rean true dual exhaust pipes all the way back to the mufflers. I chose some exhausts out of a magazine that were basically straight through, but there were baffles insid of them. When i was through i expected to notice a performance increase, well i did. It was so much slower, and throttle response was terrible. It was loud however. I have ram air, and a hyper tech chip. I went back to the regular style exhaust with the big chambered box. The car was faster then it was before i started all this. I was wandering about any backpressure problems any of you might of faced, and how did you get the most horsepower out of the situation.

thanks

That was the cool thing about the super traps. You could dial in the amount of desired back pressure by adding/subtracting baffle plates.

Here is an old pic of my 85 Vette as it looked around 1990. I did not have the high dollar traps. These were just steel with the stainless baffles. I painted them red (I that that was cool back then). If I was doing this again today, I would have them powder coated in silver with clear. That would look super hot.

And another angle.

Oh, yes that is a trailer hitch. I would tow my speed boat behind the Vette all the time. Nothing like showing up at the boat ramp in style!!!!!

Anyone else ever used SuperTrapps on a C4?

Chris,
Looks like they were lower and hang out the back further. Was that on purpose or just the way it had to be?

What diameter STs did you have, 4"?

Did you have the stock resonator?

How would you characteriz the sound, deep and throaty, or high and raspy? The ST website has some sounds, but they are of rice-burners and the sound is not different than other rice-burners. They all sound the same to me; not American V-8.

Those were 4"

The sound was tight and rhaspy...sounded like a F1 car when you really spun it up tight.

It was deep toned in the same respect..due to the basic V8 characteristics.

There was a unique whispy sound from them, unlike anything you will ever hear on any other exhaust system (with the baffles in).

I finally got a cordless screw driver with the alan head bit to make quick work of the adding and subtracting.

Most of the time I drove around with 3/4 of the baffles in.

Howzit "69" when you adjusted the baffles one way or the other, did it take some time for your computer to learn the changes of the amount of flow and back presure, or lack of it through your tail pipe's? and if so, how many day's in advance would you un cap them before the day you planned to go to the tracks so it would give the computer time to learn the changes?

I didn't spend time on the tracks that often back then.

The computer had no trouble making instant compensation for the baffle adjustment. You could feel the difference within the split minute you jumped in and thrash the throttle.

I spent most of my time back then cleaning the pavement of Rustang. Back in 1990-93, nothing but a highly modified Rustang could touch the car from red light to red light.
