First is a question for you: why replace the injectors? That's not a smart@$$ question, just curious. A healthier on the wallet alternative is to pop them out and get them cleaned by Witch Doctor or TPIS. I've read that the majority of injector problems can be cured by having them professionally cleaned. These Bosch injectors of ours are high quality products and designed to last a very long time.

Getting to the injectors is pretty easy. The fuel rail is right under the plenum and there are only a few bolts holding the plenum on.

If you went with different injectors; computer work would have to be done. You have the reprogrammable chip underneath the passenger side of the dash, right? We have a member here who can do that for you.

i am thinking about replacing them because for the past year i have had my 86 it has always had hard, long starts with some smoke{a big puff, with heavy gas smell} on startup and it always seems to be running rich.{gas smell at redlights}it only does it when it's hot,{weather}but no one seems to be able to tell me what the hell is causing all the problems.i have heard that the injectors on some of the 86 models did have problems.i guess the only other things that could be causing my problems would be something with the manifold or maybe the fuel pressure regulator is leaking??would the EGR give a signal if it was sticking or had an issue similar??help!going crazy here!!

Besides injectors, these items will cause the vehicle to run rich:

oxygen sensor
EGR
PCV

Have you been getting a code 45? That's the running rich code.

i have a new O2 sensor and no codes whatsoever.

Do you know how old the PCV is? The PCV is located on the driver side of the valve cover. It's a black tube that is connected to a valve that connects to the valve cover. You can remove it by just pulling up on it. When I pulled my PCV, there was yucky stuff all over it and I replaced it. The part was less than $4.00 and is a 30 second job. It improved ride and idle smoothness.

The EGR is located underneath the plenum about in the middle. You can look for it between the runners. That is a relatively inexpensive part to replace, roughly $45.00 or so.

Send an e-mail off to TPIS or Witch Doctor. They probably have a list of common things to look for when injectors fail; they're the experts at it. :D

It sounds to me like your injectors are indeed leaking. Have you tried a fuel pressure test? Get a pressure meter and attach it to the schraeder valve on the passenger-side fuel rail. Start the car, let it idle for a bit, and turn it off. The pressure *should* remain around 20 psi. If it starts dropping immediately, then your injectors are leaking. I had mine rebuilt (cleaned, new o-rings, new pintle caps) for about $11 each, including flow-matching. Haven't gotten the car started yet after getting them back (part of a big engine project) but they ARE holding pressure when the engine's off, which they weren't before.

Rich,

Where did you get your injector work done at?

i did a fuel pressure test and i found a problem, but it was the check valve in the fuel pump.replaced the pump and it held pressure fine.{that was a week ago}i'll check my pcv valve{it's probably the original}about the egr,,,,i know that it is an inexpensive part, but how much labor is involved??

It's not difficult labor, just basic tools but a real PITA. ;)

rich@cruzinperformance.com did the injector work. Great guy, very helpful.

Rich,

I visited their website and it was the most informative injector based site that I have ever seen. They actually took step by step pictures and detailed descriptions of what they do. I think that I'm going to have them work on my injectors later this summer.

Yeah, they definitely know their stuff. He sent me the flow results for the set, both before and after. He also swapped out one of mine for a spare of his at no cost because he couldn't get it to flow close to the others.

Rich,

May I ask how the flows numbers came out before he cleaned them? My injectors are the stock 88' Bosch injectors and I think they deserve a nice cleanin' like yours got. :D

Good advice Rich, on the pressure test. Beats throwing parts at it.

BTW, if your PCV valve is gummed up, which is indicated by no sound while shaking it, it can be cleaned with a good spray cleaner. It is a simple mechanical valve that oil vapors pass through. The hoses to and from should no be too brittle nor cracked, but the above is simple and cheap.
