I'm looking at a 96 Coupe (Anniversary) that looks like the one to buy. The car has FE1 "Suspension System - Soft Ride" and F45 "Selective Real Time Damping"

First of all, what is FE1 ? That seems to conflict with the adjustable damping F45.

Secondly, Is the F45 the adjustable option (with a switch)? the Black Book suggests it may be a real time function that continually adjusts each shock individually and maybe not able to be selected like the FX3 Selective ride.

Third, regardless if the F 45 is selectable, I imagine these shocks wear out someday. When that happens, do you need to by the original OEM shocks or are there aftermarket replacements that are compatible with the computer controlled F45 shocks? (this car has 56k so are they done?)

Thanks for any help,

Ted

First, you're looking to buy this: 1996 Collector Edition Coupe --not an Anniversary Edition. Anniversary Editions are 10 year cars, i.e. 1993, 2003.

The FE1 is the build sheet code for the Soft Ride Suspension--the base suspension. So, you probably have the 2.59 axle (code:GM1).

PLRX787 is right. Go to the CAC RPO code page and that should answer most of your questions. Your stock shocks are Bilsteins. Technology has come a ways since '96. There are really good, less expensive shocks you can get that are good--depends on what you want in ride quality.

axle is 3.07

still wondering if F45 is selectable or full time damping

I understand the point of the newer shocks but if you replace with a newer shock then the auto damping system is no longer effective unless the shock can be hooked up to the system as when new. No?

Hope this helps . . .

Selective Real Time Dampening (F45):
  • The new Real Time Damping System is the next step in optimizing ride while maintaining ultimate handling capabilities through a driver-adjustable ride control system. Selective Real Time Damping, which replaces the FX3 Selective Ride Control, is optional on all Corvette models. (Requires power driver and passenger seats).
  • Selective Real Time Damping helps to balance the vehicle by using sensors at each wheel, to measure movement. The data retrieved from the wheels and the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is processed by a controller which calculates the damping mode that will provide optimum control of the vehicle. This sophisticated driver-adjustable Delco ride control system adjusts the shock absorbers in "real time" -- 10 to 15 milliseconds. Selective Real Time Damping is designed to:
    • Reduce impact harshness
    • Improve isolation
    • Improve rolling smoothness
    • Improve high-speed stability
    • Improve wheel control

Rob - You need that new Z06! ;)
:L :L Very good point. I can't think of a better reason to go place an order for one. :D ;)

Well, I can answer my own questions after buying the 96 Collector. The shock settings are selectable on the center console. Each shock, however, has a direct link with a sensor, so it seems you would have to use OEM shocks if they wear out. If one just puts aftermarket shocks, they will not be electronically tied to the adjustable system.

love the car...1 owner ..53k.. no leaks..2 tops..all options except LT4..whooooo whoooo !!
