Shift knob remove on '86 Vette?

I have to remove the leather shift knob on my '86 automatic. I looked for a spring clip at the base of the knob, and poked around with a flat blade screwdriver, to no avail. It looks like I might have to take off the shifter button and hope for a snap ring underneath. Is this right? How do I get the darn thing off without damaging anything?

Pry the button up with a small thin flat blade screwdriver. Pry along the right and left sides. It should pop right out. There is a snap ring inside (and a nut IIRC.)
