Shiftless Automatic in a C4

Ah HAH

Wanna bet your fuel pressure is OVER 13psi?

And... have you located the "New" fuel pump?

Wanna bet you still feeding from the OLD pump?

Mike

My $2.50

BTW, I have the 84 shop manual and if you tell me what wires that were spliced I can identify them for you by color and tell you where they were supposed to go.
--Drew :w

Yeah.. go team CAC

Never fear, we're here

( corny enough?)

how's this for service, We type you wrench!

Mike

Drew,

Thanks for the offer, but I have one of those too. As soon as the engine is running and transmission problems corrected, I'll start looking at the wiring.

Mike,

New developments! Put an inline fuel pressure gauge last night and found that the pressure was 8 psi. Also, no pressure until the engine is running, which tells me that the fuel pump is mechanical not electrical like I was told.

When the engine starts, it runs normally for about 1-1.5 minutes then starts missing badly. While the engine was running, I checked the carb, I noticed that fuel is dripping from from the primarys at a fairly rapid rate. It's been a long time since I had the need to look down the throat of a carburator while the engine was running. Does this sound normal to you?

Any way, I bought a new 600 CFM Holley and will try it out this weekend. I hope this is the problem.

You guys have been great with all the help.

Ken

See Science ROCKS!

If you rev the motor..does the pressure go up?

Well maybe....check for the wiring that goes to the oil pressure switch..it might still be an electrical pump, you gotta scout for it.

The STOCK GM location of the pump is on the passenger side of the block, foward, side, low.

BZZZZZZZZZTTTTTT WRONGO! NO BUENO! BAD!

Mikes burning questions Du Jour!

What about the tranny ID?
Did you check the tranny linkage?
What color is the block?
Is your speedo working?

All RIGHT we're on the road to recovery!

Mike

When I took off the old carb, I found that the needle valve was stuck, the electronic choke wasn't working and the carburator was bolted down with only 3 bolts. It is a wonder that the car started and rand at all.

Installed the new carburator, and all the plumming this evening and it started on the second turn. Idles all by it's self now. Sounds and feels alot healthier now. Still has miss, but that should go away with the plugs and wires.

The feedback from CAC has really helped nail down this problem.

Now back to the transmission. I'm taking it tomorrow to get a trany service. Maybe that will help with the shifting.

Thanks again for all the help.

Ken

BADA BING!

I love it when a plan comes together

Good luck tomorrow.

BTW did you drive it yet?

Mike

Oh yeah

You didn't answer the other BURNING questions

Mike

Cool Beans!

Glad you got it running. You now officially have the only carburated C4 in existence.:L
But I gotta know...what in the world do you have in there. When it is up in the air at the tranny place, look at the numbers and see if it is a stock tranny too. Enquireing minds NEED to know. :D

Drewser

Not true,
There is ANOTHER
Yellow
with 96 plastic on it
Real looker till you get under the hood
AAARRRRGGGGGGHHHH!

Mike

Drew,

Do I get a prize for the only carburated 84?

BTW, I've been to the "middle of frigin nowhere" and I sympathize.

Mike,

What burning Question??
1. Didn't drive it yet. Been sick all day. Think my wife poisned me.

2. It's raining like cats and dogs here and haven't touched the vette today.

3. Don't know the color of the block yet, but I think it might be bare metal.

4. The new carb is a holley 600 CFM w/vacuum secondaries, and electronic choke.

5. How easy would it be to drop the crosfire intake back on this motor. If possible, it would be a lot cheaper that 2k for and Edelbrok TPI. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'll let you know when I can get a good look at everything.

Ken

No prize

Your not the only one( see above posting )

Sorry your sick

Are you going to build the car back to spec?
If it was me... I would sell that one and get an 86 or later, however if you want to get back to X fire it would be about $750 for Intake, Injectors, wiring harness, air cleaner & misc bits.. do you have the correct 84 hood on it?

There is an air feed moulded under the hood
that goes down to the sides of the air cleaner.

Standing by,
Mike

HI there,
When they service the trans, have the inspect the governor in the tailshaft, for wear of the driven gear.
It will be obvious, and should not take that long to check, maybe an hour total.
Besttoyou, c4c5:hb

c4c5specialist,

Thanks for the tip. I'll have that checked at trans service.

Mike,

Oh well, no prize for uniqueness.

Don't know if I will build it back to spec, but I would like to avoid the yearly inspection hassles and wind up with a good daily driver.

Hood is correct I think.

This one will be a learning experience for me and possibly be a springboard for something newer in the future. (or maybe older)

Do you know if a crate motor (I'm assuming that is what I have) would accept a cross fire injection system? Or is there a after market system out there that woud perform just well without mortgaging the house?

Ken

Higher Math

1) What are you currently into the car for
Total hard dollars not including "sweat equity"

2) How long have you owned the car?

3) What Major systems have you NOT inspected yet ( Brakes, Under dash wiring,Wheel bearings, etc) put these items on a seperate list with a rough total.

4) What is your WISH LIST ? List every item
and get a rough cost.

5) Add 20% for Oh by the ways.

6) Total 1,4 & 5.

Is it more than HIGH Blue book.

If it's lower & you love the car, just consider it a boat ( fiberglass hole where money gets sucked into).

If it's higher..consider selling it.. now that it running better.

If you don't care about the money or the time, you just want to drive the damn thing & have a good time......

Resign yourself to be "Addicited to glass"
and press on with repairs.

Mike

The car itself was pretty cheap. Only $3500 + 600 for shipping.

<$500 for books and small parts.

So far, no major investment. I believe I'll keep it for a while and still keep my eye out for another good deal.

I guess I'm a glutten for punishment.

My Last toy was a 1971 Chevy C10 w/454 , 350 trans, Auborn 3:73 posi, American solid Mags, Hoosier Soft compound radials, etc. etc..... It loved eating mustangs.
Love to tinker as you can see. Just been out of action for about 4 years.

Thank goodness for this site and all the great help. Hopefully I'll get through this project without loosing my mind.

Ken

Ok

So your an Addict!

The first step in getting help is admitting you have a problem.

"I guess I'm a glutten for punishment."

And I would have to say this is a pretty bad case

84
carburated
105K
Tranny on the fritz

That's why we have these self help groups

LOL

Mike

It's been 18 hours since I turned a wrench on my Corvette.

"So your an Addict! "

"The first step in getting help is admitting you have a problem. "

What problem?

The vette vortex is forming and I can just start hear the sucking sound. I hope I can hold on to a little of my hard earned money before is sucked down the vortex.

Had a trans service last night, it's still not shifting into third. Sounds like I'll need a trip to the transmission shop after all.

Engine idle is around 1200 RPM since installing the new carburator and will not adjust down with the idle adjustment.

I'll try to adjust the timing by ear to see where that gets me.

Ken

In my opinion

"The vette vortex is forming and I can just start hear the sucking sound".

These delusions are the first sign of a Fiberglass addiction.

Corvettas hookus maximus!

What did ya find in the pan, how was the filter?

You might consider having the bell(valve) body pulled & cleaned it is what controls the fluid flow thru to the servo(s) The problem is not it's slipping in third..It wont go correct?

You closely examine the shifter linkage?

1200 rpm..check for a vac leak or remove the throttle linkage..make sure the cable will let you close the throttle plates.

KEEP GOING...YOUR ALMOST THERE!

Mike
