hey guys 92lt1, auto with 85k on her. runs great and i love the car. However i've noticed that maybe one in every 50 times i step on it at a speed of above 41mph (or when the tcc is engaged) it will "sputter/cough" when it kicks down b4 it takes off. this only last about a 1/2 of a second. now like i said it doesnt do it all the time 99% of the time when i step on her she kicks down and goes. but maybe 1 out of 50 times it will have that little "hicup" when it kicks down then she will take off. since i bought the car back in sptember the car has done it maybe 5 times and ive put 3-4 thousand miles on her. no lights or codes on, no sputters at idle or at anypoint on the highway or local streets. she runs like a dream, only maybe 1 in every 50 times when i kick her down at speeds above 41mph she will get that slight "hicup" b4 she launches. has anyone experienced this? also i apoligze if it takes me awhile to reply for some reason my blackberry will let me view this page but will not let me post, so i can check all your responses at work tomorrow but will not be able to reply until i can get onto the computer.

go back ck plugs, wires, fuel, sensor settings...there is a reason it stumbles. nothing serious, just a tuning issue.

Connector

There is a wireing connector from the opti that is visible from the passenger side of the car. Check it for corrosion. In fact check all the connectors you can see for corrosion and clean them. This may or may not be your problem but at least you will have had your hands on her.

ok so i think i may have found the problem, i forgot to mention that i have straight pipes on the car> i never experienced this problem until i had the pipes put on. i have also noticed that occasionally when under heavy acceleration at low speeds i will sometimes get a backfire on the 1st-2nd upshift. im wondering if my pipes have created a lean condition? i spoke to my vet mechanic today and hes going to try and grab me a hypertech chip off the shelf of his work to see if that corrects the problem. any ideas? and again the prob isnt all the time only sometimes. im hopping a chip will jelp it run more rich and get rid of the occasional backfires and or the slight shutter i sometimes get when trying to kick down on the highway.

Yes, straight through pipes and/or change of length can cause a backfire and loss of power: case in point the "Harley brainiacs" but I would think it would be constant. My bikes in the far off days of moto cross would need re-jetting. Doesn't the ECM adjust the mixture to suit ?.....Roger.

On my 96, the occasional stumbling was from plug wires not in wire organizers properly (arcing in the dark). Took pic's of a propery wired 96 and corrected problem.

I have muffler eliminators and I occasionally get backfire on downshift, especially if I've had my foot in it (which is almost always . . .). Most race cars backfire on downshift so, for me, it's an easy trade-off for the engine music!

Now . . . if I could just get it to spit flames!

The;ricecrowd uses a propane injector a few inches from the exhaust tip to get that "i'm bad" look with a blue flame shooting out...:boogie

The day that an accord really pukes out a flame in deceleration like a $100,000 hendrix engine will be the day I paint flames on my walker.

Ricer crowd, AND, Schrade too uh HUh, with his meth-injected, 65HP JD Hydro-static 42" rider, with posi, duals, Eaton/Magnuson MP62 blower from JEGS YUP.

im not sure what im going to do now>>>i cant have the car dynoed because it doesnt have a flashable ecm or tuneable ecm... my other vet mechanic told me that a chip might help b/c if its back firing under load its running lean< the other vet place told me if its back firing under laod its running rich, lol so now idk if i should buy a chip or not?

Get scanned. Eliminate the guessing game...

Any mechanic who says that something 'might help', might be a good guy, but I'd have to pass on his wrench. "Tell me WHY, and SHOW me".

Your car is very tuneable, just speak to the right people. Do a search and see for yourself. I've been screwing with my 86 for several years now.

Check out thirdgen.org, very good information over there. Also look into moates.net.
