The Vette owners manual recommends using dielectric silicone grease as the lubricant for weatherstripping. I went to the dealership to get some the other day and the clerk practically refused to sell it to me because he said it was the wrong stuff. I gave him the part number (12345579) and he was very reluctant to sell the stuff. So I decided to verify with you guys. Is this what you use to lubricate your weatherstripping? If not, what do you use, and where do you get it?
Thanks in advance.

Go back to the dealer and purchase the grease again. I guess the clerk wasn't thinking straight that day. Read on. Now if you still have a problem with that clerk, you can either ask for it and say nothing, or if he asks you what you're going to use it for, you tell him you are going to put it on your light bulb casings. You have a bulb out in the tail light. That's what it's used for. That, and spark plug boot to plug tips, female to male wire connections. Just go in there and be ready to sound like you know what you're talking about. OH SNAP! What did I just mention? Didn't I just say the silicone was used for spark plug boots? Isn't that rubber? Now go back in there and tell the guy it won't harm rubber at all. What was he thinking???:duh

Thanks Cntrhub. I'll do just that. I guess I assumed the parts guy would know a little about the GM flagship but maybe that's too much to ask. I'm sure he had knowledge of other important things. But everyone should know about Vettes: Americas most awesome street legal beast.

Hi there,
If I may, there are a few things that your dealership may be considering that you may not be aware of.
In the service information, there was a TSB issued about weatherstrip conditioning.
IN c4 years, because of the design of the c4 weatherstrip, being vinyl over rubber, the silicone would actually break down the skin vinyl prematurely.
In c5, you can use silicone, however, there is a better alternative. 3634770 is the part number and is better than silicone.
If you use it per the instructions, you will find that only doing this once a year will do just fine, and you will NOT have the slime on the weatherstrip that you have with the silicone lubricant.
One tube is about $45, but it will last several years.
My theory is that this is what they may be thinking of.

Is there a name for that stuff? And is there an aftermarket item?
Thanks

Hi there,
This is the GM partnumber, and it is called Weatherstrip Lubricant.
I am not aware of an aftermarket item.

c4c5specialist, what is the process for application of the Weatherstrip Lubricant (3634770)? Does one put a dab on their finger and rub it around the weatherstriping until the weatherstriping is completely covered? Or, is there some other process for application?

HI there,
Here is the directions directly of the applicator in front of me.

Clean surfaces to be treated with window cleaner or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply contents liberally to all weatherstrip sealing surfaces. Allow to soak for a minimum of one hour. Remove excess with a clean, dry cloth only in the areas that may contact clothing when entering or exiting the vehicle.

Just remember that the tube comes with an applicator already on it, which will dispense the liquid when you push it down on the weatherstrip.

Thank you C4C5. You are a true wealth of knowledge around here. Hopefully one day I can return some good advice to you.
