Kenny took the top end of the engine off the 78 today and found I had slapped the #4 piston into the intake valve and bent the pushrod and possibly the valve also, as it is sitting cock-eyed.

We are replacing the heads and I would like to request some number running info on my engine block.
The numbers at the rear of the block are: 10066036. This should be a 1997 250hp GM crate engine.

I also noticed that the numbers on my new heads are different from each other, they are:
4361, 0210-021D
4361 0, 0206-045D
1.94-1.50 ss valves, 67cc combustion, 170cc intake, 70cc exhaust, Z28 springs @ 120# w/ steel retaining locks and rollertip rockers.

Is it normal for the second set of numbers to not match or be sequential?
Also, is there a Right and a Left head or does it matter what side they go on, as they look identical to me.

the heads can be interchanged it seems as if the date codes are only different steve:v :_rock :w :w

Thank you, both!

I have another question for you, c5d...

It's about the FelPro Blue gaskets.
Are the blue lines actual sealer, or is that a paint-by-numbers guide for applying a sealer?
I have also had several other recommendations, in addition to you, to use Permatex Copper Coat. Is this product readily available at local auto parts stores?
Thanks again...
Heidi :w (soon to be on the road again!)

I had the same question last week when I was putting my heads back on. I, too, was told that the blue gaskets do not require any additional sealant. So I went with that...

I put a new head on mine a few days ago with Fel=pro blue gaskets. I didn't use any sealer and have had no problems so far with 10.1 comp.

Just a quick bit of info. 1 head gasket is 15 bucks, a intake set is 10-12 bucks, a set of exh gaskets are about 12 bucks, and a set of valve cover gaskets about 10 bucks. Thats about 50 bucks for me changing 1 head. You can buy the Fep-pro ks2600 gasket set for 37 bucks and get all the gaskets and in my case a extra head gasket, exh gasket and valve cover gasket also including all the other ones I didn't need, but may someday.

Numbers check out to be from an Iraqi missle cart. These engines were later replaced by donkeys. :L

Seriously,I didnt know that you had the same engine that I put in my 68.I still havent heard it run. Please dont tell me this is a bad engine. How many miles before this happened?

Donkeys? I thought they used desert rats?

I saw your post and your question brought about my own question...

I think you're okay paintdaddy...

Engine has been in the 78 since late 1997 and has about 45k on it. My problem appears to have arisen due to poor maintenance on our part. :o Kenny found loose bolts (center of intake on pass side) that could have easily been rectified if we'd have checked them on a regular basis. We think this is what led to my problem.
Otherwise, the engine runs strong and has been very reliable.
Heidi

The only place Fel-Pro blue PrintoSeal gaskets need any sealer is a small bead around the coolant passages at the front and rear of the intake gaskets; I use Permatex Ultra-Copper Hi-Temp RTV there, and instead of the separate front and rear intake seals.
