Spark Plug Wire Replacement Help

I am looking to replace the spark plug wires on my '89. I can't seem to get the wires out from behind the valve cover without potentially causing some damage. Has anyone done this and can offer any tips.

There's a metal clip back there to hold the wires in place. You should be able to open it to allow the wires to pass through. I know, it's tight in there, but you can do it.

I changed mine a couple of years ago. Everything went fine until it came to removing the old wires. They all slid through except one. After fighting with it for 1/2 an hour, I declared it the winner and closed the hood.
