Afer checking my speedo cable with a drill on the tranny end of the cable and finding that the speedo worked I checked the plastic speedo gear in the transmission housing and realized it was free wheeling... not contacting the speedo drive gear on the output shaft. I removed the gear sleeve and the plastic driven gear and stuck my finger in the hole and could feel the gear on the shaft was off center. Thought I had checked this last time I had it apart but maybe not. I sat and pondered it for a few minutes as I wasn't looking forward to pulling the tranny just to move the gear a 1/2 inch but then decided that instead of freeting about it all afternoon I might as well jump in and get it done. It had a very minor leak that left an occasional drip on the floor so I figured I would take care of that at the same time. After disassembling the tail casing I heated the gear with a torch and was able to easily tap it down a 1/2 " to the rear. Tomorrow it goes back together and back in the car.
