Speedometer wouldn't work so I pulled the tranny....

Afer checking my speedo cable with a drill on the tranny end of the cable and finding that the speedo worked I checked the plastic speedo gear in the transmission housing and realized it was free wheeling... not contacting the speedo drive gear on the output shaft. I removed the gear sleeve and the plastic driven gear and stuck my finger in the hole and could feel the gear on the shaft was off center. Thought I had checked this last time I had it apart but maybe not. I sat and pondered it for a few minutes as I wasn't looking forward to pulling the tranny just to move the gear a 1/2 inch but then decided that instead of freeting about it all afternoon I might as well jump in and get it done. It had a very minor leak that left an occasional drip on the floor so I figured I would take care of that at the same time. After disassembling the tail casing I heated the gear with a torch and was able to easily tap it down a 1/2 " to the rear. Tomorrow it goes back together and back in the car. :)

Wow... busy day for you! I need to drop my tranny as I suspect my pilot bearing isn't happy but I keep putting it off... :(

Thats the way to do it,

Sorry for the trouble.
Some folks might say
" do it during the winter dont lay the car up "

But the truth is you'll be driving it by next week end anyways.I always feel this is what seperates the mice from the men. NO Mac I am not calling you a mice.I had a problem with the trans on the 62 and I snapped the detent,I was ****ed and was going inside to feal sorry for myself for the night. Before I made it to my stoop I turned around and pulled the trans out ( to prove to the car it could not beat me no matter what it thru at me )so the the trans guy could fix it. its always easeyer to to walk away from a problem,

I do have to say your a brave man for digging into a trans like that,I am always afraid I wont be able to put it back together correct

MAC & Larry,
This is the second time I have visited the inside of this tranny so it is becomming quite familiar to me. I have good resources also, an exploded view of the entire M20 assembly as well as step by step reassembly instructions.

Is that gear moving around by itself? :confused

Very good question. That is what I was wondering also but don't think so. Took a good amount of heat before I could get it to move down the shaft by taping it.

Just an update. Got the tranny back together Wednesday night and back in the car Thursday night. The speedo is working nice and smooth but I'm not sure how accurate it is. Feels like I'm going faster than it says. Have to work on that, but it was a nice excuse to go for one more top down ride even though it was only in the high 40's today. :)

I had the same problem on my '67. The only thing I could figure out was that I knew that the trans had been apart before I bought the car so I blamed the prior owner. :L Never had a problem with the gear again.

Tom, I'm hoping I won't have any problems. I don't think it will move, it was pressed on pretty tight. Just think it was reinstalled on the wrong spot when it was rebuilt.

Wish the C-2 was as easy to drop a tranny...... as the C-1 is.

If it was... might take mine out once a month to polish up the Input /Output shafts...:L I know Barry K Would...;LOL

Funny you mention that. I did polish up the tip of the input shaft and then lube it. Also cleaned up the bell housing opening where the tranny slips into it. Went back together nice and smooth. ...Poor Barry....
