It has been a little over a month since i got my car back from the first mechanic due to getting stuck with a bad starter, he said it took him 3 starters to fix ( all were bad ) well the 3rd one he tried worked that day but when i went to pick it up it from him it did the same thing , turn the key and click or nothing ( gen light does come on ) he could not believe it, he was able to hot wire it to get it started, then it was starting in front of us like ten times, but he kept it for a week just to see and it started every day , so i took it back and it has been starting no problem since ( about a month ) well today i start it as usaual went on my way made a one stop and it started and went to another store , came out and it's doing the same thing as before , i even hit the starter a couple of times , still no luck , well i found a decent garage who fixed my tail lights, so hopefully he fixes this problem, i had to get it towed to his garage ( closed today) so i wrote him a note telling him my story and to maybe to put a heavy duty starter in, or maybe this car has a short? Has anybody had this stater problem? , I thought i was okay and it was a fluke, but i guess not, this sucks because i want to drive it to carlise!!! Rick

This is about a last chance thing, but have your mechanic check to make sure the flywheel is correct and that the starter matches up correctly when engaging.

Even here in Europe we have the same $^#$*& thing with those damn starter. You think its a beautifull day to drive around but when the starter is hot and it doesn't start... the only thing you can do is wait. I just put a brand new starter under it but i don't know for how long this one will hold up. Isolation etc is just posponing the problem and not erasing it. But did they put a new starter under your vette Rick or just another one?
The only thing I can remember to also check is checking your groundcable from the engine to your chassis and from the chassis in the back to your generator. When you have some durt between the connections its difficult for the amount of "power" to "flow" (to much resistance) so cleaning them could help.
One it on the right site from your engine just before the starter to the "innerside" of the chassis enginemounting. Second one if from your rear crossmember, just on under the front diff mounting to your generator inside the vette. (i think the word generator is correct..)
If this doesn't help and you want to buy a new starter, i heard some very good thing about the mini torquer.

Took out the cheap one that was no good , installed an ac/delco perfect!!
I'd be questioning then why your mechanic kept installing cheapo starters... oh well. As long as it's fixed...

I got rid of the first mechanic and found a decent one, he said the starter was a cheap jap rebuilt one!! He installed an ac/delco i can tell the diffence of how it starts , very fast and no spinning sound afterward, I'm very happy
with this one, now it has the corvette start up sound!!

IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 3 WEEKS WITH NO PROBLEM, HAS A NICE FAST START COMPARED TO THE CHEAP JAP STARTERS!! Ac/Delco starter should have one part # for a 81 right? i don't know what my mechanic used for a part #

I GOT RID OF THE BUM , FOUND AN EXCELLENT MECHANIC WITH GREAT PRICES, HAD MY STARTER REPLACED, SPEEDO FIXED, TRANNY LEAK FIXED, AND HEATER/AC BLOWER FIXED $ 505.00 PARTS AND LABOR, NOT BAD COMPARED TO THE BUM THAT RIPPED ME OFF!!

There is an Old Hotrodders trick to eliminate the hot start problem; altho with a stock motor it should not be a problem. There is a lot of heat where the starter is mounted and the solenoid/wires mounted on top of the starter gets hot and won't make proper contact. To eliminate this you use a firewall mounted solenoid and jumper the one on the starter. They sell kits to do this and they are called "hot start kits" or something most speed shops have them. Won't pass NCRS judgeing though ;)

FWIW my old beater blazer was having start problems it turned out to be the "S" wire had melted so I shortened it and put in a firewall solenoid-problem fixed.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY CHECK POST # 9 ?
Because you already answered the question in post #9. Then you reanswered it again in post #14 (Kinda like you forgot that you already answered the question) :L
