Dose my 86 have a starter fuse or relay somewhere? I had a dead battery and used my battery charger to charge it, and i used the cranking setting to crank it over, all i heard was a terrible noise, and now my starter won't even make a click noise, just completely dead, aslo my battery will no longer hold a charge.

thanx, dan

On some GM cars there was an ignition fuse, I am not sure if it is still used. Are you sure the battery was dead in the first place. Could be your starter was failing . The extra boost from the charge may have been enough to give it one last gasp as it ended it's life. Could be a bad connection on the battery cable, giving the illusion that the battery is dead. Hope these sugestions help.

Hey thanx, but i got it going, i don't really know what happened. I charged the battery overnight and it works fine, I guess it was completly dead. Funny thing about it was i jumped it with another car, and it was reading 13V but the starter wouldn't even make a noise, so i assumed the worst cause the lights were bright, so i figured that the started should have worked if the lights were working. Guess I was wrong.

How old is the battery? How old is the starter?

That lack of any noise that you described when you tried to start the car; it was the same problem I had last December and it turned out to be the starter.

If it's the battery, nothing will come on inside the car. None of the interior lights will light up.

Either item can be tested (usually for free) at your local auto parts store.

If it's the battery, replace it with a Delco or Die Hard. The starter, Delco or Bosch.

And make sure to get a set of shims if you replace the starter, they're only $3.00 or so for a set. And also make sure that all the connections to the starter are tight and clean.

The starter was replaced in 91. The battery is a year old. It was hard to tell where the noise was coming from, i heard a lound electrical malfuncion type sound in the door dinger, and the heater fan kicked on, and some odd noises from the engine compartment. Like it was getting to high voltage. I am just going to let it go for now, if i notice any other odd sounds i'll inspect it further, but for now, i am gunna leave it. The starter seems to be OK as well,

thanx
