My 85 vette wouldn't charge at idle now it charges at idle until you put it in gear. Even when you hold the throttle at the same rpm that the engine is idling at in park(which is about 650 rpm) it still won't charge. What should the engine idle at in park and in gear? Any suggestions? I have checked all the grounds I could find
Thanks everyone very much for the help in the past and the future!!!!!!!

I don't remember if you replaced the alt. Sounds a little like brushes hanging up. Take a large handle screwdriver and rap on the alt. see if it changes anything. Might even be a bad internal connection.Could be a regulator acting up. Outside chance that there is a break in a wire that opens when engine shifts under load.

Have the alternator tested and replaced if bad. It maybe just warring out.

I HAVE REPLACED THE ALTENATOR ALREADY BECAUSE IT WASN'T CHARGING AT IDLE AND IT WASN'T CHARGING MUCH WHILE DRIVING. NOW IT IS CHARGING GOOD WHILE DRIVING BUT STILL NOT CHARGING AT IDLE IN GEAR EVEN IF I BRING THE IDLE UP BUT IT CHARGES IN PARK OR NEUTRUL wHAT RPM SHOULD IT IDLE IN PARK AND IN GEAR?

Gear position should have no effect on charging.

You say it doesn't charge in gear at idle.

How do you know?

Do you mean the volt meter is lower when in gear?

Do you have a belt underdrive installed by any chance (crank pulley is smaller, alternator pulley is larger)? This may be the problem.

I PUT A SMOG PUMP ELIMINATOR ON IT BUT IT WAS DOING IT BEFORE I INSTALLED IT.

Brake lights working correctly?
