on my 1975 c-3 there is a thick steel or stainless steel cable going from the steering column to where the gear selector is on the side of the trans ,it seems to be incased in what i could only describe as steel flex tubing and someone has cut it off right next to the trans i cant imagine what it could be ,its way to thick to be the remnants of a kick down cable. once again i ask for your wisdom people of the cac. thanks rick:Steer :Steer :duh

Sounds like the ignition lock to me. Can you take the key out without putting the gear selector into Park?

tom...

It's the transmission interlock or "backdrive" cable; it was originally connected between the shift lever on the trans to the little lever at the bottom of the steering column. The lever on the column turns an internal tube that turns the "collar" just forward of the steering wheel, so you can't turn the key to "lock" and remove the key unless the transmission is in Park on an automatic or reverse on a 4-speed. Its assembly and adjustment is shown in the Service Manual and the Assembly Manual.
