Ok I've farted around a lot in getting to know the forums but now have an honest to god question. Starting to-day I Have a noise which sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car. It sounds very much like the sound plastic gears make in a battery operated device. The noise only occurs at low rpm's and it happens with the car in drive or neutral or park. Of course I have to gas it it in neutral or park to get to where the noise happens. (which to my mind sort of eliminates things like the rear end, wheel bearings etc. although it's not that sort of noise anyway) the only thing that really occurs to me is the fuel pump, but I would think noise from it would be more constant. I've looked through all the "rear end noise" threads in the c4 section and haven't seen anything like this. Any thoughts?

Maybe it's all the "farting around" that you hear? heheheh

Ok, it's coming from the rear of the car but is RPM dependant? You can hear it sitting still? The only thing I can think of that can possibly vary based only on RPM in the rear of the car is the fuel pump....unless it's just something rattling.

If you do wind up replacing the fuel pump...put an '85 pump in it.

One thing I forgot to mention, this started right after I had the tranny and radiator flushed and fuel, air & oil filters replaced.

Problem Solved

Well it's one of those noises travel strange sort of deals. The sound was actually coming from my air filter housing. I had to get someone else to rev the car while I was outside to figure this out, since from inside the sound "obviously" was emitting from the rear.
What had happened was when I had it serviced there are two little rubber seals around the throttle bodies, these seals were not properly seated when the the air filter housing was taken off then put back on. Thus the unique noise I was hearing.
