synthetic motor oil and trans. oils

I am looking into switching over to synthetics in my engine and transmission. Would appreciate any feedback, Pro and Con that you'all might know about.
Also, brand preferences or dislikes, such as Mobile, Penzoil, etc. I have read a lot lately about the Amsoil synthetics but you have to mail order and I don't like that, plus I 'd rather hear what you'uns got to say first!

I use synthetic when ever possible and change as i go in all of my vehiclesfor all drivetrain components . I use gm products and mobile 1 but i suppose they are all similar but some people will have preferences . there was a post on the oil guys or something you may want to look there for opinions . if i can find the link i will post it steve

I've been using synthetics in all my vehicles for years with no problems (except the cost). I use Valvoline for no particular reason, but I'm sure Mobil or any other legit brand would be fine. God bless, Cris

Jim........... I have 214,000+ miles on my '81 and have been running Mobile 1 Synthetic since about 100K miles without a single drip, leak or problem. The engine has NEVER been opened up and/or rebuilt and I am only now just on occasion getting a little valve seal puff of smoke if she sits for more than a couple weeks. I have not switched the tranny fluid to synethic yet.

Thanks for the imput and support, Steve, Chris, & Nut! It'd be nice to have a legit independent report on what readily available synthetic is best, like Consumers Report. The reason for the underline is, regular Mobile 1 trans oil was put in my trans when rebuilt, and I just cannot get the stuff in my area.....which is why I got started in this venture in the first place. I reasoned if I'm gonna have to change brands, I might be better off to change to synthetic in the process. By the way, Mobile 1 synthetic is available in this area, and that may be my choice. thanks , jim

I used both Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec 5W-50 engine oil in my 81 for many year without any ill effects. Don't have any input on it use in the transmission or other applicantions.
Not to confuse the issue, but since I am over 100k miles, I have change to "Max Life" 10W-30 oil which gave a immediate affect to quite down general engine noise from lifters and the like.
