It is charging system related (battery, alternator etc...)

Did you install an aftermarket stereo recently? If you did, I'll let you know what the problem is.

Most likely a weak battery. Guy

SYS display

Ditto here, 7 year old battery.
New battery, no more intermittent SYS indication.

Mine blinks because of the after market stereo.

Just curious...
Did you know that you can correct that by adding 2 resistors?

No I didnt. How do you do it?

Spanish, thanks. I really love them. I didnt think about powder coating the sawblades. I bet that looks pretty good.

I'd like to know as well. Our new (to us) C4 has the sys light flashing. The battery was near dead and we replaced that. Sys still blinks. Car seems to be charging ok. There is an aftermarket stereo installed (?).

It has to do w/ the dimmer function in the original stereo which the aftermarkets do not use, so there is an open circuit causing the SYS to flash. Drove me crazy when I had the new stereo installed until I think it was tlong who posted the fix.

It was then that I realized that many members here had the same problem and all resolved it the same way. Unfortunately I ran a search on SYS/stereo and the only thing that comes up is this thread. I'm not sure but it may have someting to do w/ Rob & the new server but I can't imagine we lost all prior thread search capability.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that I still have the info for fix at home in the stereo box and I will post it for you. It is a very simple fix, the toughest part being you have to remove the HU to add the resistors. Once done, the SYS will immediately stop flashing.

If for some reason I cannot find the info at home and the search function continues to come up blank, then we can PM tlong for the fix info. I'll check tonight when I get home from work.

See ya

BTW...Love your ride! :D

Question Jeff...

Back to the SYS blinking on the display...

I had a wreck and the battery got drained while the car sat for about a week or so ... (damaged the door adjar switch on passenger door) Got the car started and drove it for about 1 1/2 hours ... SYS still blinking after that time... Is it still a week battery??? or something else... The car started fine... half way into the trip and started after the 1 1/2 hour of charge... What do you think about that???

Hmmm...

Well unlike the SES light which can be reset by erasing the memory the SYS light will flash until the problem is resolved. (at least I'm pretty sure of this).
Your problem sounds charging system related therefore I would have the battery/charging system tested. $20 at your local shop. Even though the battery was recharged enough to start the car it may still be on it's last leg.
You can also check the volts by turning the key to the ON position w/o starting the car (on a cold engine) and see what the reading is on the digital guage. It should not be below 11 or 11.5 or you have problems. Once the car is warmed up it should read around 14 or so. Also be sure that the door ajar switch isn't still causing you problems.

How old is the battery? You may need a new one.

Good luck :)

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. My 1995 C4 sat for about 3+ weeks without being used. It started ok. I noticed that my front tires seemed to to low in air pressure, i.e. down to 20 psi. I ran my small compressor off the cigar lighter socket to get them back up to pressure. The "SYS" light went on. I drove the car a bit but the light was still on.
Came back a few days later, started it up, this time the light signal did not appear. Did a lot of driving about 100+ miles that day and still no problem.
I think it has something to do with a battery that is low in its charge, and in my case I put an extra burden on it and the charging system by using the air compressor. Once the battery got back up to strength the problem disappeared and the light did not reappear.
I would put a charger on your battery and give it a full charge and see if that helps, also check out the charging system. This is probably some kind of battery related charging problem, but it could also be a short somewhere in the electrical system.
An added thought, when the "SYS" light came on I should have shut down the engine and checked the battery voltage, that could have provided me the answer immediately.

"sys" (System Error) flashing in the instrument cluster is you're Central Control Module (CCM) showing a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). It's most likely something as simple as the above mentioned items or NOT. You need to enter the diagnostic mode of you're CCM. Do this by grounding terminal 12 to terminal 4 in the Data Link Connector (DLC) use a paper clip. The DLC has 16 terminals 2 rows counting from left to right top row is 4 below it is 12 ( good for 94 & 95 models not sure on other years). Turn on ignition, the CCM will display any DTC's for 3 seconds in the speedometer, write them down. It will display them in sequence (grouped) by mode with "---" between them. It will end with 1.0 on the display. Press "Trip Reset" button to scroll to any codes then press and hold "ENG MET" to clear each of them. Codes that start with "C" are current "H" are history. When all codes are cleared it will display "C12" (On Board Diagnostics Operational). Post what codes you find I can check them to the CCM DTC Code List. I know this sounds scary but after you'll be impressed with what a powerful tool a paper clip can be! :)

Here is the resistor info:

You need 2 ea. 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors.

Connect both resistors to ignition power wire in the old Bose plug. It should be yellow.
Connect one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
Connect the other resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
Insulate the resistors. I would use heat-shrink tubing.

Do not forget to disconnect the battery.

PS We had a friendly race between the Seals and the Marine Security Unit at the track on Presidents day… The Seals were slippery but we prevailed.

the FIX

Here it is:

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new (aftermarket) stereo, he will need to do the following:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

It works.....

Thanks fellas. I may try that this weekend when I am done painting the house.

Damn seals. I cant believe the MCSF let them win one. They must have felt bad for them or something. ;)
