This morning, I loaded up and headed for Ye Ole Wheel Shop in Maryland as discussed in an earlier thread for an estimate on (Callaway Dymag) wheel refinishing.

The trip itself was quite an event as I headed up towards Elkridge Maryland; the highway was shut down, not a good start to this escapade. As I watched the clock tick, it was nearing 12:45 p.m. and the place closed at 1:00 p.m. At about 1:10, I made my exit and headed towards the address I had grabbed off the Internet – this is where the drive went from bad, to worse. As I drove up and down Washington Blvd., looking for the address in the 7200 block of RT 1, no wheel shop could be found. Eventually, I stopped at an auto repair place and asked for directions, the shop had moved a few miles down the road. Off we went, the clock now showing 1:25 p.m.

A couple of minutes later, we found the place, right beside the Laundromat as described by the auto repair guy… At the solid front door, with the hours clearly posted, I found it locked with no answer. Having just endured I 95 traffic and getting lost, I wasn’t giving up hope, a tug on the side door revealed it to be unlocked however, an alarm went off inside the shop! It was an announcement type of alarm and the folks inside came to see who just popped inside the shop.

I chatted with the guys about the trip up and asked if they had a few minutes to look over my wheels I had brought with. Once they saw the wheels, the one guy mentioned they were expecting me – as I had called earlier in the week about their services. We went over the pricing and it seems that wheel refinishing is $95.00 for Dymag wheel refinishing and INCLUDES the center cap at that price, something I had not previously known.
The pricing can go higher, damage such as chips; chunks, cracks, etc. are all possible reasons. As we looked over my wheels we decided that two would be refinished at this time, the two in the worst shape. One had been previously repaired (crack) while the other had a leak in the rim and had epoxy, sealing the surface.

This brought us to an in depth discussion of magnesium wheels and why they can go “bad”. It seems bare magnesium wants to always try and return to its original natural state – as natural as Dymags look on a Callaway, I do not think that was what he meant.
He went on to say the magnesium wheels must be finished (painted) inside and out or they will decay slowly. The wheels I had were “blasted” by another repair shop and left in that state when given back to the customer, something that is VERY bad for the wheel in the long term. As they peeled back some paint, it showed to be nice and shiny, he said it would not stay like that for long – maybe a week at best. The Ye Ole Wheel Shop said a process called “glass beading” is the proper way to handle these delicate wheels and then to finish them inside & out. That was what we decided to do with those two wheels, after they are welded at their noted points of earlier mis-repair.

Stay tuned; as this is an exciting prospect for all magnesium wheel owners, especially Dymag owners as spares are rather elusive. This may take up to a month however; I will provide updates as often as I get them. Standard refinishing takes far less time and the “turnaround time” is much quicker as a result.

enjoy :m

Good Luck Chris I hope all works out well. I know there are a lot of us looking forward to an option for Dymag repair and refinishing.I can't wait to see them finished as I have seen one of them in person . It will be nice to know we have an option for these wheels.

Pete, thanks :beer

The biggest point I suppose the gentleman was trying to make was, anyone can spray the wheels and say they are refinished but he took some time and showed me how they would "do it right" as he had showed me the wheels were indeed refinished before incorrectly :eek

I recall someone had had a leak issue w/ their Dymags, this may be a possible solution.

Stay tuned :upthumbs

Chris, great story! As you know I'm thinking about doing mine which are mint compared to your spares. A couple only have some scratches and a chip on paint etc., but since I need to rerubber for safety (15 year old gators)? Thought they would only be dismounted once, SO why not. Sounds like they know their stuff as posted before. Not looking forward to 2-way shipping though.

Speaking of rubber will 285 work for rear?

Paul, good deal :beer Please mention I told you about the place when you call, as I said other Owners may be interested in their services- The gentleman I spoke with today was John.

I have 285's on my SuperNatural and I think the Dymags are slightly wider. Someone once put a 315 on the Dymags we have and did not report any issues - although the sidewall was a bit flared.

After what John told me today, I would be worried about having a shop blast my wheels (pitting them) then mounting tires & not ever knowing. Nice thing about Dymags, they are lightweight & that saves on shipping :upthumbs

**Remember, if you need your center caps redone, that is included in what I was told today.

Glad this helped :beer

Sam runs 315s on the rear of his car. :beer Im thinking of doing the same...285s for sure though.

I'm running the 285 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s front and rear on my car. I'm very happy with the ride and handling. Fit is good and they fill the wheel wells nicely. They are just a bit taller than the stock 275s. .4" I think?

Kevin Thanks! That is the tire I want after seeing yours. Glad to hear all is fine, I would have thought it might be much in front though.

Thats an awesome deal! Think about it, the center cap alone costs $100+.

Surf, That is absolutely correct!!! :eek That alone should make you want to have them do your work, besides the fact they explained how to do it right :upthumbs

I will have Part II soon...

Anyone know what the Runflat wheels from Bridgestone are made of? Magnesium or ?

May be worth showing the pic of that wheel to get a definate answer - that is one of the worst bent Dy's I have ever seen - BUT, at least the entire wheel looks to be there...

I can ask, next time I go up to the wheel place, if you are looking for a theoretical answer - as the auction on that car ends in 1.5 days...

Hope this helps :v

Im not going to bid on his auction I plan on working him down on the price he has told so many people so many different things. so I need to bombard him with what he Told tom, and what he told josh.

right now he is hovering in the 5K range and he wants to keep the top and the seats, with carpet which I could care less about but it will be a part of my negotiation.

If you could show them that picture and see what they say I know its hard not having it in front of them but it is pretty trashed.

next time I go up, I will - are you the one who placed the bid on that car?? I suppose with as many Vettes as you have parted, etc. you would know what is involved with an undertaking like this (sorry for the pun ;) ) :v

ebay auction

Chris whoever buys that car to do a transplant had better have a whole lot of money. Just thunk what is involved new ramshorn and supplimental injectors 2 intercoolers ,2 downpipes, AT LEAST ONE TURBO. wonderbar , framework to fit the turbos and resupport it .2 exhaust manifolds custom exhaust set up for a Callaway, new plenum , runners , throttlebody, Callaway ac lines stock lines will not work. All turbo plumbing, Larger radiator, oil pump, transmision, new head, ect the list goes on. the cost of these pieces is through the roof not to mention some are not made anymore. The microfuel is not needed as a new management system would be better control for the system. Whoever buys that car had better be a magician because only a wave with a magic wand will ever get that car on the road again correctly.
