i have a 94 with a 383 stroker ran great for 3500 miles then the dreaded code 42 apeared when i built the engine i replaced the opti spark because we all know how much fun that one is to get to and all parts about to be listed are all new including the coil, wires, plugs, ignition modual, ecm and nothing helps i found in a scematic the asr and the wire leading to the b wire on the ignition modual are the only common link and the service asr light is on
I own a scan tool the mac mentor and all is showing ok but code 42
could he asr be the short to ground because everything but the wiring harness has been replaced and i havent found any chaffing on the harness
any help would be appritiated

My 84 has thrown code 42 ever since I tuned it up. (new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, valve cover gaskets and K&N)

It runs great though and a friend of mine who is a genious at mechanics said to leave it alone!!! He said I might make things worse by piddling around too much.

It runs like a scared dog and gets great mileage.

You need to give more information does it stall in gear ?

Is it hard starting?

Is the tank full of fuel?

Does it have a high or low idle?

What have you checked to repair the problem;shrug ?

the car is a 6 speed starts ok somtimes sounds like it is firing too far advanced outher times its normal fuel tank is full and have done everything the manual says to check and all the tests are within specs

I found an indepth artical on #42 by ken hughes @ www.asashop.org/autoinc/may97/techtips.htm
its greek to me but a gm tech should not have a problem so its off to gm

I think you need to disconect your wire going to the est and try to check your timing if you have a timing light?

The wire is on the drivers side right at the back of the head,it is a two piece conector.

Also 86 vets have a problem with idle I think you should disconect the + cable on the battery for 90 seconds and run it for about 15 or 20 miles to see if the computer learns the engine .Then shut it down and let it cool over night and start it in the morning.

the problem has finally been found it turned out the rotor in the distributer had come apart where the plastic rivets hold it together and it started eating its way thru the cap 1300.00 later my vette is back were it belongs back on the road
