My a/c compressor is toast. The new compressor is compatible with R12 (freon) and R134 (the new stuff) and I an considering converting it over. From what I understand I need a kit and a new evaporator (which I already have). Has anyone attempted this on their pre 94 (I think) C4's? What are the drawbacks, things to watch out for etc. ?

I have done it several times.

You need however a vacuum pump and manifold gauge set to finish the job. Otherwise, you need to take it to a shop anyway.

It won't blow as cold at idle in traffic, but other than that, you won't notice a difference.

Unless you are certified by the EPA per Section 609 of the Clean Air Act, it is a felony to open up and or work on an a/c system for auto's. Your best bet is to take it to a qualified tech at a reputable shop. Or......go to www.qwik.com and for 20.00 you can take a 25 question test and become qualified as a MVAC Tech. Then you can buy R-12 and legally work on your system.
Per the Clean Air Act , soon you will have to be certified in order to buy R-134.

First you will need to flush the entire system. When the compressor goes bad it fills the condensor and the hoses with debri. All that must be cleaned out along with all the old oil. Change the orfice tube. Use the r-12 tube, not the 134 tube. Change the accumulator. You will need 8oz of 150 pag or ester oil and the 134 conversion fittings.
If you still have r12 left in the system go to a garage and work out a swap. If you give them your old r12 they may evacuate and recharge your system for the cost of the 134.
Make sure you have a good fan clutch and that the aux, fan works. 134 runs higher head pressure and needs the cooling it can get.
