What do you know about this system? Will it work while playing a CD? Do you have experience with a DVD Nav system in your current car? How do you like it? Will you get it in a C6?

HI there,
The DVD navigation system is very similar to what is in the Cadillacs.
Single DVD, touch screen prompts and usage.
I like it, very simple to use, and yes, it is an option in c6.

Someone on another site is saying that;
1. you can not have a CD playing and a NAV DVD loaded
2. The CD player with the NAV is NOT MP3 capable
3. IT is a $3,500 OPTION!!!

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF ANY OF THIS IS TRUE?

I've also heard no CD capability and Nav at the same time, but also heard that it would work. Not sure on the price, ouch.

What does the DVD have to do with the NAV?? Isn't it GPS based? My GPS handheld has no DVD and works perfectly. Is the DVD just for system updates and installing new data? The whole thing smells fishy to me...

Yeah, I'm LOST on this! :L :L :L

if its anything like the Nav/GPS in our 03 Expedition, you have a book of CDs/DVDs that cover regions of the US.
The GPS works within the CD's database of current roads and locations.

Lets say Im in New Orleans, LA.
I want to find the D-Day Museum and Im currently up on the I-10 headed West.
I can scroll thru the menu and select this destination.
The software CD combined with the GPS then provides me with verbal and visual directions.

I can also enter an address from the on screen Keyboard. Software and GPS then give me directions to this address based on the database of roads and info on the CD and the position in the "world" that the GPS sats are reading.

Make any sense?

Yeah, that makes sense, but does the CD/DVD need to be in the player for it to work? How is movement of your vehicle perceived by the system? The BMW actually takes 95% (or so) of it's location finding from GPS and 5% (or so) from wheel speed sensors and steering wheel inputs to augment if the GPS signal momentarily gaps. It's pretty advanced. I know some of the other cars just use GPS solely.

Loading data into the Nav system for your region would seem to be the easiest and most sensible method. Then remove the CD/DVD, toss in your favorite RUSH CD and hit the road!! :cool

The "Big Brother" approach to all this is that GM is pushing XM and the only way to get audio in the car with the Nav system running is to have the XM!

Buster Im not sure honestly.
There are a few folks here on the CAC who work for Ford that might know much more than I.

The Expedition has a 6 CD magazine in the center console.
So when we cruise, we have the Southeast Nav CD in the dash single slot, and then listen to CDs from the multi magazine.(far as I can remember its worked)

Rain(off to new orleans in the vette)

HI there,
First, lets start with this. While the single DVD is inside the player and functioning, you cannot listen to a CD. There is only 1 DVD.
The reason for this is the voice recognition(VR) system within the navigation unit. Obviously, if there is background noise like from music, it will not work correctly. You do NOT have to use the touch screen, voice prompts will work better for the safety of you and your occupant.
The system use a GPS transponder to access your position, and references vehicle speed from the PCM to also track location progress.
In order to use the navigation voice recognition, you must install the DVD and press the AGREE button to start the VR session.
Once this done, most prompts to the entire system can be used, without taking your hands off the wheel.

I hope this quells the debate.

Thanks for the info, that clears up some of the questions.

Do you know where the GPS antenna lives? I'd hate to ruin the sweet lines of the C6 with a goofy looking antenna sticking out of the top.

Sounds like if you want a Nav system, you'll have to settle for an aftermarket CD palyer maybe, and throw it in the dash.

What about the radio...

Given the fact that the NAV system utilizes voice recognition, what about using the radio when the NAV system is active? Will that work?:cool

HI there,
This would depend on how you use the system.

I think I will have to wait and see it before I make a decision on it. Especially if it cost $3500.

I also heard that if you have the HUD the nav will be desplayed there as well.

Yes, this is true. :)

The New Sound system with Navigation (RPO code U3U), ETR AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback, (U65) sound system feature, Bose premium 7 speaker system, DVD navigation with GPS, 6.5" LCD color display touch screen, voice recognition, includes Radio Data System, seek-and-scan, digital clock, auto tone control, automatic volume and TheftLock.

You can not get the 6 disc in-dash CD changer with U3U Naviagation system because there is not enough room behind the dash for all the hardware.

Hope this helps! :beer

The nav system is a moving map type display on a touchscreen LCD. I don't think it is displayed in the HUD. But maybe turn indicators, directions, or something is. In the F-16 we have something like that, but the HUD just isn't capable of displaying the moving map.

I agree. That is what I meant. Even so it still would help keep your eyes on the road and going in the right direction.

I never heard of a system where you couldnt operate the navi with a CD. It cannot be a $3500.00 option(no factory unit is that expensive) and it may not be MP3 capable.

HI there,
Directly from GM service information for the 05 Navagation section......
To use the player as a single music CD player, you must first remove the Navigation map DVD. While playing a CD in the CD/DVD Player, the navigation system is not available. The message "The disc installed is not a map DVD" will appear on the display if any of the Navigation hard keys are pressed.
