Ticking noise and heat from console.

Hello everyone, new vette owner here (woohoo). Loving my car except for two things. I have a 2007 manual transmission coupe. The console by my right leg next to the gear shifter gets very warm and makes my leg sweat. Anyone know what is up with that and also. When driving in 1-2-3 or higer, I hear a ticking noise underneath the car that gets faster with the engine rpm's. It is very noticeable in 2nd around 1200 to 2300 rpm's. Dealer is clueless and has had my car for 3 days now with no progress...grrrrr
Any ideas or comments would be much appreciated. I now have 1700 miles and the car is barely a month old....PLEASE HELP!!!

Welcome, Congrats youngster.......having a brand new vette is a good thing.

Having a '73 , im not much help to advise you here.

HI there,
As far as the heat goes, thats due to the exhaust pipe running down the center of the car.
This will warm up the tunnel, and that is why GM put the AC duct right along the tunnel, to assist in keeping the driver cooler.
As for your ticking noise, if you rev the car up with the clutch in, is the noise still there?
IF you rev the car up with the clutch out but in neutral, is the noise still there???

Hello c4c5specialist, I have seen a lot of post from you and did not expect to see a reply from you. I am bery happy you did. As far as the noise, I cannot test what you asked since it is still at the shop and I am working out of town. I did rev it up with the clutch out in neutral and the noise is not there. It seems to be there only in gear. Today is the 4th day they have had it and they are still clueless. They did try telling me they could not hear it at first, but I unleashed on them and they got the point. The noise is obvious but maybe not harmful. I left a message with the tech advisor, since they never seem to answer your calls, about what you had said to try. Hopefully they will find it soon. Thanks again both of you for the reply.

Welcome vetteman77- the tunnel heat you are probably going to have to just get used to. The ticking... c4c5specialist will be the best one to help you diagnose that.

Good luck...hopefully it will turn out to be something easily addressed.

Thanks Tammy, after getting that reply from specialist, I agree. I am so glad there are people out there that can relate to the same issues and help with problems. I am very excited about this whole experience as a new vette owner. I will probably own vettes the rest of my life... Thanks again for your reply Tammy. c4c5specialist, I spoke with the service people today and they said they would put it on a lift and try to pin point where the noise is coming from. If they cannot find the noise EVER, am I stuck with a noisy car or what? What do they do in cases such as that? :eek:hnoes

HI there,
2 pieces of testing equipment can be used.
Electronic stethescope will help to pinpoint the noise in any metallic component.
If there is a vibration associated with the noise, the electronic vibration analyzer will assist in that part of it.

Just got off the phone with them before I read your post. They think they have found it but it does not make since to me. They think it is the right converter. Wouldn't that same noise happen in neutral if it was the converter? They did the clutch test and it did not make the noise at stand still with it in or out. Let me know what you think c4c5specialist! Well I guess that is what I needed to hear. I will be patient, it's just I have been burned by dealers before on repairs and they basically just tell you to live with it. I will keep you posted on what's going on. Thanks again!:cool
 
Vetteman,does the clicking sound occur when the car is hot only? Also, welcome to the site. You do not have to "live with" the tunnel heat issue. There are places that specialize in heat insulation kits specific to the C6. Check with the forum sponsor list. The kit I'm going to use cost $205 plus shipping.
 
Thanks for the info! No, it happens as soon as I take off, even out of my garage a few minutes after starting it. I drove straight to the dealer aoubt 10 miles away and they heard it immediately. Techs are saying right converter. Who the hell knows. OK, imagaine this sound, a zip tie wrapped around a drive shaft and every revolution it is slapping the frame or whaterver. That noise but fairly faint. So you can see that the faster you go, the more the sound blends due to high revolutions (rpm's). That is the best way to explain it. Thanks again for the reply.:cool
 
Converters can make all sorts of sounds. Been dealing with them since the first one was made in 1970 or so.

Hi vetteman77, just saw your post.

I have an '07 manual as well. I have just passed 3k miles on mine sense March. I have never noticed any heat issues on my R. leg (and I'm a hair over 6' tall). I have made a couple of 4 hr. trips with no problems. Although I always run with the AC on.

On your second issue, I do not have any ticking noises. Both my '07's have been absolutly perfect so far (OH NO, my desk is metal, I have no wood to knock on).

Thanks for the clarification,Vetteman. If the "clicking sound" is associated with the wheels rotating, then it most likely isn't the throwout bearing. If the tempo of the clicks speeds up with wheel speed, then the cat can't be the solution. It's in/on the driveline somewhere. U-joint,ABS sensor dangling (this would definately throw a code,) brake rotor/caliper mount, brake pad hang up,axles,driveshaft.

Vetteman, while you're under there, have the tech retorque the wheel (axle) nuts & swaybar mounting hardware. Have him do the lugnuts too. I forgot to look, are you Z51?
 
No Z51 package. Just got off the phone with the techs. They agreed that it is not the converter, but they still cannot find anything. They are going to ck the wheels, axles, etc. so they say. I guess I will have to live with the sound and be ****ed at GM for not doing a good enough job trying to help me fix my problem. I thought by buying this car, I would never have problems and that all dealers had a corvette specialist available to try and solve these types of problems, boy was I wrong... :mad
 
Had a good friend of mine that used to work for Cadillac ride with me and he said it sounds like my lifters and that it is normal for such a powerful engine. It is not obnoxiously loud just irritating to me because the car is new. Has anyone noticed this noise around 1500 to 3500 rpm's? He said if it was an issue like them going bad, I would really notice the noise. Thanks all!:cool

Ticking The following is my post on this forum from several weeks ago. I heard the ticking from the first mile I drove after picking my new C6 NM6 coupe.

"I just picked up a new 2007 coupe MN6 and have driven 43 miles so far.

This quiet ticking sound comes from the engine compartment, is regular, and increases with increasing RPM. It's not a clicking nor a hard clunking. It is a quieter ticking that is most loud from about 1000 to 2300 RPM. I can hear it especially well in second gear at about 20 through 30 MPH.

It seems to diminish over about 40 MPH in third gear.

It's not really loud and most "normal" people probably wouldn't even hear it at all. :L

Is this one of those "Oh ya, that's normal. It's the __________". Could it be the AIR pump or something like that? Does an LS2 even have an AIR pump? Never mind... I withdraw that question. But I am curious about this ticking."

Since posting this description I took a very honest and knowledgeable Chevrolet dealer tech with me for a drive and asked him to drive my car. He heard the ticking. Other passengers cannot hear the ticking.

It occurs in 1, 2, 3 gears from around 1,200 to 3,500 RPM. After that, road and other noises overshadow this ticking.

Because I have owned several Corvettes since 1966, I am especially sensitive to ticking and sharp metal-on-metal clunking sounds. These too often meant a rod or other bearing, or clutch, or something expensive was going bad.

I pursued this noise for a resolution or identification. I, like you, was disappointed in this one detail of an otherwise great machine -- the C6.

I spoke with and corresponded with some knowledgeable people including a Corvette engineer at the factory.

This engineer listened to my detailed description and answered my questions.

I assume that my ticking is also the ticking you hear.

I repeat the engineer's facts here to help you alleviate your concerns and thereafter totally enjoy your C6.

"
The 1000-1500 RPM engine tapping noise a lot of people hear on the C6 comes from a combination of valvetrain noise and fuel injector noise. To get the 50HP improvement over the LS1, the LS2 needed a more aggressive cam profile. As a result the rocker arms and valves move farther, faster than they did in the LS1 and make more noise as a byproduct. This is a characteristic of the LS2. The fuel injectors also make a sharp tapping noise as they cycle once per 2 engine revolutions, the same frequency as valvetrain noise.

The reason it sounds like a single "tapping lifter" is because in the driver's seat you are primarily hearing the #7 cylinder because that is the one closest to the front of dash and the fresh air inlet of the HVAC system. If one were to open the hood and remove the engine beauty covers, the noise from all cylinders combines and becomes a uniform sound. It is the isolation of the cockpit that accentuates a single cylinder's noises."

I am completely satisfied that this ticking is a very minor and irrelevant quirk of the LS2.

Today, after 2,300 miles I barely hear the sound. I accept it as a personality trait of my fantastic C6.

I hope you can accept the ticking. Perhaps it will diminish for you also as you just enjoy your C6.:beer
