1989 Callaway Twin Turbo Aerobody Coupe
I was on my way to drop my car off at Dave Secaur's The Final Finish. I was driving up I95 when a C-5 pulls along side and wants to play. Well lets just say he didn't have to egg me on too much. We take off and we start moving at a good clip and I am pulling away on him and all of a sudden I hear this noise that sounds like a huge blow off valve come from my car. Well I let off the gas let him go by and pull over to the side of the road pop the hood and what do I see ...the intercooler down pipe blew off the turbo. Well I did some roadside repairs and was on my way again.I did dent the pipe and now I am waiting for Ted Rice to have some made at Callaway The pipes will be polished this time so I am getting A set left and right . Polsihed will look better under the hood anyway. But really check all your hoses and clamps you don't want this happening to you. It scarred the HELL out of me I thought I blew the motor or something. Well I will not have my car for about 2 months and when I get it back it will be an aerobody.!!!!!!

Wow... I can't believe you drove that low mileage beauty in these winter conditions

When you said you were heading up to Final Finish I guess I thought you'd be trailering. I didn't get your mail until it was too late to head down there.

Your advise is very good and should be listened to by all TT owners. It's something that Matt in Dallas (UltraSlow) told me a long time ago. Loose hose clamps and fittings on the turbos and intake plumbing are a big problem with these cars. Lots of times there is a boost leak and you aren't even aware. I've never heard of what happened to you happening before but it stands to reason that it has. Under full boost your pushing some good pressure through those lines!

Glad you aren't the next one in the "Toasted TT Club"! Now we need to track down the kill story where the guy with the C5 is boasting about how he smoked a Callaway Twin Turbo. :duh

Can't wait to see your car when it's done!

weather was nice today for a quick drive

I spoke with Wayne from Callaway and he knew which pipe came off before I told him. I guess the drivers side pipe is prone to this. I guess this has happened before . Well I have a new set of hoses upper and lower intercooler hoses and a new down pipe for each side and hew hoses for the down pipes to the turbos. I just have to wait till they make the new pipes.

One of the hoses to really keep an eye on is the hose located on the driver side down pipe, this hose is made to resist the intense heat due to the fact it sits so close the the exhaust manifold, but with time this hose can become brittle and break or tear. loss of boost thru a small tear is quit possible without notice, inspection of this hose really requires looking at it from underneath the car to be sure it's in good shape all the way around. Or get one of those adjustable small telescopic mirrors, they come in handy when doing a complete under hood inspection.

I would have loved to seen your car on a trailer ;)

I too, am looking forward to seeing the finished car :)
I suppose the first thing you do is go "hunting" for that C5 driver once completed :beer *89x2*

Yep!... I went through that once myself. I now periodically check to make sure the hose clamps are tight. The drivers one seems to loosen more because I tend to nudge the intercoorler to get the oil cap off.

Happy New Year to all!

Welcome SAM!

Thats interesting....I have to remove the intercooler on my car to get the oil cap off!

:confused That doesn't seem right.

Mine is on the drivers side. I need to tweak the intercooler a little bit but it comes off fine. Also use a flex funnel.

its on the drivers side...I tried but to no avail. The intercooler sits too close to the cap. I can turn it but there isn't sufficent clearance to remove it.

its not really a big deal though...comes off and on in less than 5 mins.
