Hi folks,

Well the rears are leaking so it's time for new SS sleeved calipers. In looking at the Vette Brakes web site, I see there are a bunch of different options and I need some help on how to differentiate these. My car doesn't get driven that hard and only gets 500-1000 miles per year so it sits a lot. Any thoughts? Here are the options on the VB site:

New Delco caliper 65-82 $150 each - Stainless Steel Sleeved New DELCO Castings with Patented O-Ring Pistons and Seals

1st design caliper $140 - 1st Design Remanufactured Stainless Steel Calipers Standard equipment on all 1965-66

O-Ring caliper with insulators $130 - Remanufactured, Patented Xtreme Duty O-Ring¨ Insulated Calipers

New O-ring caliper $130 - These machined 4 Micron stainless steel Calipers feature NEW castings

O-Ring caliper $93 - Remanufactured Heavy Duty O-Ring¨ Calipers

2nd design caliper $90 - The 2nd design lip seal piston with 4 Micron finished sleeved calipers

I chose these.

Over 7,000 miles this past summer. I'm happy with them.

sorry, inside joke......

I went a different direction than VNV with my brakes and had no problems, but after I saw what he went through, he's probably right

I went a different direction

That's why you ended up in my Driveway.....:D

No! No! NO!

The brakes will fail the NEXT time I break down in your driveway. The LAST time I broke down in your driveway was because I used the factory Jesus clips on the shifter rods.

I'm using these. Three years no problems.

Thank you for the recommendations! That said, can anyone explain the difference between an O-ring caliper and an insulated O-ring caliper? Or what is 2nd design vs. 1st design?

And no jokes about 1st design being one better please! ;-)

The prices you've got listed seem EXTREMELY high. Seems like the going advertised price for a set of calipers is from mid 60's to about 80 bucks, with sets including pads, hoses, etc starting at around 300 bucks depending on vendor.

Solid

Do you happen to remember seeing a thread a little while back that read " Nothing is more expensive then cheap tools " well I'm sorry to say the same goes for the brakes and calipers on your Corvette.

Did you know that a complete set of first quality calipers with pads, is less expensive then a set of replacement dentures, not to mention the fiberglass on the front of your Corvette. :duh

As the old oil filter ads used to say, " you can pay me now, or pay me later "

The "insulated" pistons are only important if you're road-racing. The "1st Design" ('65-E67) vs. "2nd Design" ('67-'82) refers to an internal casting difference with piston guides or no piston guides, which means nothing. Most rebuilders machine out the piston guides when they get those cores anyway, so all end up configured as "2nd Design" calipers with new pistons.

The $93.00 rebuilt VBP calipers with SS sleeves and O-ring seals is an excellent buy; they're far less sensitive to rotor lateral runout than the conventional lip-type seals.

I agree. I am a very price conscious person and I researched my caliper buy before hand. I got mine from VBP and I am very satisfied. As well as having a good product they are a well established busines and will be around if I need them.
