I Have the Zr1 rims and a deal on Firehawk Wide Ovals.

The deal is 265 40ZR17 for the front 285 40ZR17 for the rear.

or should I go with 275 all around.

I do not care about rotating the tires to save money.

Which conbo would be better and why.

I have the ZR-1 rims on my 1986 convertable with P315/35R17 in back and
P275/40R17 in the front. Looks and handles great. Can't rotate them but then who cares. Got Sumitomo tires from www.tirerack.com delivered to the house for $441.69 for all four. Love them so far.

I got a real good deal on the rims and they are 9.5's not the 11's

I would have preferred the 11's but $$$$.

So that is why the combo, I'm just wondering if there is a great handling advantage to smaller fronts and wider backs vs all the same.

The new vettes are all coming that way.

I don't know about 86's, but the later C4 Z51 suspension included four 275/40-17 tires on 9.5" rims. It made the handling neutral versus a bit of under steer on the regular suspension. If you've got four 9.5" rims, I'd put 275 all around.

great site, thank you!

Chevrolet went to that type of combination in 1993. 245/45 x 17 (8.5 x 17 wheels) Front 285/40 x 17 (9.5 x 17 wheels) rear, because it tracked better on rutted roads. As was stated earlier Z51 and Z07 equiped cars had 9.5" wheels and 275 tires all around. Your combo should work ok. The 285's will be about 1/2" taller and 3/4" wider than the 265's

The width of the wheels plays big a part in the selection of tire sizes.

With the 9.5" wide wheels, the 265 tire is going to be much too narrow for that. I would go with a 275/40 as it is the correct size for a 9.5x17" wheel.

The 285 tire fits easily on a 9.5" wide wheel as that was the factory size at the rear on '93 and later cars that did not have the Z07 suspension or the 96 car with Z51.

The 265's should be OK on the 9.5" wheel. There is only about 3/8" difference in width (10mm) a 265 is 10.43" wide the 275's are 10.82". 245's on the other hand are only 9.6" wide.

I'd go with 285's all the way around. They'll fill out the wheel wells a little more plus give ya' a little wider profile in back.
