To hot to starter

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem or knew of a remedy. If I take my vet for a short ride of a mile and a half to four miles and shut it off, the car won't start until the starter cools down. If I take a long ride and shut it off I have no problem starting it. On a short ride it may take up to three hours for the starter to cool off and then the car will start with no problem. I have sometimes quickened the start time by pouring water on the starter. Any suggestions?

The heat soak starter problem pops in now and then on everything from a 68 to an 82. Quite common when headers are installed as more engine bay heat is thrown off. Your starter has most likely seen better days and likely should be replaced before it gives up entirely. An after market heat shield seems to help a lot, but yours may be too far gone to have much if any benefit. You should also clean and re-tighten all your starter wire connections whether you choose to replace it or not, can't hurt, and just may save you a wait beside the road.

Heat sheild

This cured my problem. You will have to remove starter to install the heat sheild though. www.jegs.com has the sheild. less than $40.00 wrap the end too if you opt for the blanket.

Thanks for the help. Decided to replace the starter. Will also go with the heat shield. Unfortunately you called it right about the wait along side the road. Guess I learned the hard way.

yep....I pulled a cramer and ran my old starter till it finally puked. From the first time having issues to the puke took about 7 or 8 months.

Well, I was not so fortunate. I tried three different starters - even with with a new A/C delco starter. bought exhaust wrap, heat sheild... nothing worked. I finally bought a racing starter out of Summits catalog - you know the high torque ones to turn over high compression motors. Cost me $150 but have never had that problem again!!

there is an old hot rodders trick to use a ford solenoid on the firewall and jump the wires on the starter solenoid; now a days you can buy a "hot start" kit from Summit or Jegs etc to do the same thing. I get a lot of "whats that for?" at cruise ins
