The biggest reason why the manufacturers went to vacuum secondaries is this:
The secondaries would only open as far as absolutely necessary to fulfill the air and fuel requirements of the engine. A secondary (no pun intended
) result of this was the ease of tuning that was now available to motorheads. The sizing of a carburetor was made much easier and you did not have to worry about running too rich or lean at wide open throttle.
