While driving yesterday my 84 automatic just quit engaging gears. The only gear that it was taking was 1st gear. I tried 2nd ,OD and D and it wasn't engaging at all. I checked the trans fluid and was a little bit low. After adding some still doing the same. It will only drive on first gear. By the way before that happened, I had lifted the car to do some maintenance on the tires. Can it be that something came disconnected somewhere? Please Help... I will welcome any suggestions

Nothing that I know of that affects the transmission gear selector when you lift the vehicle to change tires.

It doesn't sound like it's a fluid level issue either. How was the transmission acting before this? :confused

It was working fine. The car has 120000 miles on it. Last year I had the trans serviced and they told me that eveything was fine.

Wow, these things must happen at the same time on these cars. Just over a week ago my transmission went out on my 84. Happened when I was on the highway doing about 90. All of a sudden my rpms went up but my speed stopped increasing (not that i should've went more faster). Then when i pulled over the car would run in first gear, but every now and then slip out. I thought a vacuum line got disconnected, or that it was low on fluid, but unfortunately not the case. Needless to say i was quite upset, and have decided to park the car for the winter. I'm gonna spring for the rebuild towards the end of the winter so I'll have her back on the road in time for the spring. I hate it when stuff like this happens, but oh well, stuff happens.:beer
