Hey all!!

I am trying to determine if my 76 has a shift kit or not. mods include rebuilt 350 bored 30 over. Edelbrock manifold, carb, headers, no emissions, no cats 2.5" exhaust, Borla mufflers, Trany rebuilt, slight oversized cam, stock heads.

The stock engine performance sucks 190 HP, but after the mods that were done I am guessing around 250HP maybe 275HP....do you agree??

If that is the case, I cannot catch any rubber from the start guessing because of the 3.08 rear, but I catch second doing it automatically and can also do if I up shift manually from low.

Should I be expecting anyway if no shift kit was installed? I do not want to remove the pan to figure this out unless I have to.

I also just installed an NOS system 150HP increase, but I still need to get it calibrated timming, colder plugs, etc.

With NOS kicking in at 3000RPM's and off at 6000RPM's will the shift kit hurt the tranny due primarily to the hard shifting?

Hard to say without knowing the specs of the camshaft, the compression ratio and whether or not the carb is properly calibrated.

If a "shift kit" is installed properly and it is a "street performance" type kit, the 1-2 shift oughta really bang hard and you should bark the tires. That you can spin the tires on launch is either becuase the engine is performing much less than it should down low or you have a very tall axle ratio.

You sure wouldn't want to go more than a 150 "shot" with a stock short block.

I'd set the rev limiter at 6000, if you have one.

Thanks for the input:beer the carb is an Edelbrock 650 right out of the box. Do you think that it is OK from the factory like that? If I changed the jets, rod, or springs could I feel a decent difference;shrug ?
The axel ratio is a 3.08 and I am guessing that is why it might be bad off the line. The advertised NOS for 150 is max on the system, but they said that only if everything was absolutly perfect it would achive that. They told me to expect somewhere around 125-135.

Just a couple of things. The 3.08 gears could be responsible for a lack of punch off the line, but I would expect the car to do it. 150 horse N2O is a lot for a stock engine. I have 100 HP and it is considered the max for stock with stock tune, and I am running a zz4 crate. Can you take the car to a dyno and run it with a wideband 02 reading, that will tell you if the carburation is set right, also, perform the same on the bottle, one lean spot and you can have holes in your pistons. I contacted NOS and Edelbrock when I purchased my kit (Edelbrock), and was assured that a great deal of design goes into these systems, and if your engine is fairly stock, you WILL see the advertised HP gain, better than that is the torque gain. If you havent done it, I suggest a WOT throttle switch, and a fuel pressure safety switch.

Cheers, and have fun

Richard..thanks for the input. Here is what I read with the associated links to the doc.http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/NOS/GenInfo/InstlReq.html

I have the PowerShot and I just found out that it is 125HP not 150 and that it will work perfect on a fully stock engine. Read the link and let me know what you think, it is really good for any NOS questions folks have.
I am going to have to get it to a dyno shop for the calb. and I opted to go with a MSD window switch and a main kill switch to turn on at 3000RPM's and off at 6000RPM's. When the main switch is off the car runs normal, and when on...well you know the rest HOLD ON! pretty simple.
Why the fuel pressure safety switch?? It seams there are a million safety things for NOS that may not be all that important unless you are running some serious NOS and HP to go with it, meaning 200 HP NOS and above. Trust me I do not want to blow the engine... I have a fair amount of money invested. I also do not want to buy more stuff that will clutter the engine compartment. I am also a novice to this stuff and this NOS is my first install.

I have a new Edelbrock fuel pump using a fuel regulator and a fuel pressure gauge to monitor it. What else do you suggest and why??

Do you really feel you NOS system?? Am I an for a shock??

Answering your last question, sitting at 2500 rpm with the NOS off and the car in 1st gear, flooring the pedal will cause the front of the car to lift slightly, and goes pretty well, at the shift, about 10 feet of rubber can normally be expected, (turbo 400 with a shift kit). With the NOS on, and the same maneuver, the rear tires will lightly chirp and whine all the way through first gear, and will leave about 40 ft of rubber going to second. I took my 17 year old son out with me, and on the bottle, he developed a really wide grin. Ask Norval about Nitrous, it is a hoot and is very addictive. I have a low pressure fuel switch because I am running the stock pump. At idle the swith is open, and closes around 2000 rpm, almost as good as a window switch. I put lots of safety equipment on purely because my wife will kill me if I break the engine.

Cheers

Richard

You have me drooling now!!! How are you sitting at 2500rpm at stand still?? Break rev maybe? Did you have someone calibrate it for you upon install??

I totally understand the wife thing same here
