Hi, I have come up with a general route across the US for my 48 state trip to visit and research owners of corvettes for 30 or more years.

Many of you have already sent me locations. This route is the general direction that I will be heading and I will travel about 200 miles on either side to visit .

If you would like to be part of this project and share your story with me, let me know with a PM of your location, zip, phone etc.

In a few months I will have a more accurate route and will share it with you. I will also be visiting others who would like me to stop by to share my trip experiences, so let me know even if you have not owned your car for 3 or more decades.

I would also like to meet family members who may have inherited their car from a family member. I am also trying to stop at Corvette historical sites, clubs and and chapters.

The link below will take you to my map.

Look forward to meeting you

Here is some background on trip:

Let me give you some background of how my trip and project came about.

When I was a junior in HS, a friend came to school with a 1957 fuel injected black corvette.

I was in smitten. I was not a racing or corvette hobbyist. I just loved the car and the speed and attention it got.

In 1969, I got my first job and bought a 1961 corvette.

It caught fire and in 1970 I bought a 1966 L79 roadster from a Navy pilot going to Nam. I am the second owner.

I used it as my daily car, and it 1974, I had finished work, I had some money in the bank and I was going to take a year off and drive across the country from the east coast to the west coast. Just living off the land, working when I had to. Just the car, my tent and a compass that pointed west.

Just as I was about to leave, "Life Got in the Way" .

So after 36 years , 250,000 miles, a couple of restorations, and 4 engine rebuilds, I am going to take that trip with the same car & tent.

As I was preparing my car for the trip, I became a member of several corvette forums. Except for the engine and paint, I was doing all the work on this final restoration and needed help. I got all the help I needed.

I started to meet many other long time owners online and I thought it would interesting to meet some of these people on my trip.

My project is not so much about the cars that they own, but the relationship between them and the car.

Many of us have gone though Marriage, birth, death, divorce, triumphant and tragedy, yet the car is still out in the garage.

I wondered what traits do we have in common?

So what started out as a personal journey, has grown into something else. My goal is document that relationship or "love story " if you will.

I hope to spend informal time with you and others like you. I will ask some questions, take pictures of cars, and have you do some tasks before I get to you. But the story is not about the car, what year, what option, but the story of how you still have the car and what it means to you.

Many have tried to get me to schedule my trip with certain events and parades, and I am sure I will make a few , but I will be most happy sitting by a backyard fire, having a nice talk others who make up the special few that we are.

I hope that answers some of your questions.

I hope to put my travels into possible articles and a book but the main part of my trip is to have fun, meet interesting people, see blue highway America.

Look forward to meeting you

Jack

Let me know when you come through St. Louis. You can see where the first plant was although there isn't much left now. You also might want to talk with one of our members who has had Corvettes for 50 years now. Can't tell you how many he has had. He use to get some of the "special" parts out of the back door of the factory so I know he could probably tell you a lot of stories. Also our club meets on the first Tuesday of the month if you should happen to be in town during that time. Send me an email to hagenow1@charter.net or a pm when your plans get more defined.

Sounds like a good plan, Jack.

I have had my 64 for 43 years. Raced it in TX, OK and AS. I know the car inside and out. It's on it's third engine rebuild.
Back in the early eighties we did a trip around the US, in seven days! Cannonball, One Lap of America. Great fun but exhausting.
I have a plant in the north end of San Bernardino, Ca right off route 66. Think about timing your trip to pick up on some of the more interesting car events. If something breaks in the area I have the facilities to help out.

Thanks for offer

I just love CA. Looks like I am going to be zig zaging across CA from the coast to inland and back. I will put a pin in my map for you.

PM with location info, zip, phone , email

Jack if you go thru Bowling Green KY. stop at the NCM and see my brother in laws 53 Vette that has been in his family starting in 1954. The car is on display with the 1,500,000 Corvette made along with the 500,00 and the 1,000,000. It is Vin # 130. It was restored a couple of years ago by a CAC member Brett Henderson owner of Blue Flame Restoration. That car is like a NEW 53 Corvette as it came off the line back in 1953. Good luck on your trip.

How could I go on this trip without stopping in Bowling Green. Thanks for info and I hope to make it to your neck of the woods also.

Don't know if you have a taste for California wine; to be more specific from the Napa Valley. I could perhaps put together a valley cruise for you including visiting and maybe meeting Mario Andretti at his winery (and tasting some of his wine).

Let me know if you are interested and I'll also contact the local Wine Country Corvettes club.

Hoping to be pinned :D

Rhys,

Thanks for the offer, Yes , I will pass through your area. CA has a lot of members and cars to visit. I think I will probably spend more time in CA and FlA. than any other states.

PM with Zip and phone and I will pin you. Funny, I haven't pin this many people since college!! I should be in your area some time in Sept. A wine tour sounds great. Looking forward to meeting you.

It is 10* this morning in southern Maine. Clear sky, no snow on ground. I think I will go for a ride. top down ( well actually I don't have a top now, new plastic window being installed) ski goggles on, gloves, blanket on lap, music turned up.

The locals think I am crazy, but have gotten use to seeing me out in everything but rain. At least until I put new weather stripping on.

Jack,

Just sent you a pm with my information.

Funny you should mention about driving in the snow. We have a couple in our club, actually the people I think you would like to talk to, who drive their vert with the top down to all our events except when it's raining. It gets pretty cold in Jan and Feb around here but that doesn't stop them.

I should have a lot of fun in your state.

I don't know if you have info on John Luther in Palm Coast FL. He bought his black 57 FI new and still drives it.

While I don't qualify since I bought my 57 in 91, I did buy it from the original owner's widow...

Hi, No I don't have info on John, and it would be great not only to meet him but you also. This is a personal journey across the country, and the meeting of other long time owners , has taken on a life of its own.

Everyone that I meet will add to my research and enjoyment. When you think of if, at the end of my trip, I will have physically sat in or driven more 3,000 years of corvette history. I would also like all to drive my car. My car will have had 3,000 plus years of driver experience at the wheel...... 100 owners, 30 plus years, that's the math , plus all the rest.

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to do this

Please PM with info, (zip, address , email, phone) if you would like me to put you on the map.

PM'd ya twice - with a total of three prospects (including yours truly, thank you)!

This is shaping up to be an awesome trip from the sound of it - I envy you, Jack! I'm subscribing to the thread so that I can stay in the loop as your plans develop.

Since I bought my first Corvette in 2001, I don't fall into the 30 year category, but I'm up for lunch, photos and maybe even a C5 escort as you cross the Mississippi Coast. :thumb

I'll be following your posts.

Hi Jane Ann,

PM with location and I will put you on Map. I think I am going to make it to Mississippi , and would love and probably need lunch by the end of Sept. It should be quite a trip.

The worse part about this trip is that I will have to clean up the shop so you can see the cars. :(

I wouldn't worry about it

Talking to you will be more important than looking at the cars. Not that I don't like looking, but the history of you and the cars is much more interesting.

Car is at painter's now. I get it back late April. I am working on seat frames now. Got my speedometer by from Corvette Specialties and will install it this weekend , before paint so I can put my feet and legs on back deck while on my back. It will be the first time in 40 years that I will have a speedometer.

Can you believe that I have never gotten a speeding ticket in all that time.

Watch, as soon as know how fast I am going , I will get one

Have a great weekend

Jack
