How ofter do you get a tune up and are their partial tune ups, full tune ups and when do you know you need one besides the obvious?

Also what do they cost and should l have my dealer do it or bring it to a speed shop.

I have had my 96 LT1 for two years and as far as l'm concerned it rides just fine and starts up right away.

When l first picked it up the dealer told me that it's fine and didn't need a thing as far as a tune up.

I usually do it when it feels like there's something to be desired. That could be a couple of years. But I wouldn't let more than 3 years go by without doing a tuneup. I figure that maintaining it will keep it pleasureable to drive and possible prevent bigger problems in the future.

As for who should do the work, I do it myself. I can't afford to pay others to do it and I don't trust others to do it.:D

Yeah ditto to that. Everybody waxes you on their hourly rate. The guys that pulled my motor and put it back in was 70 dollars an hour, and I that is the cheaperst I found it.... If at all possible do it yourself.

That would be a mistake!

I can do anything around the house except anything electrical except fixtures. But to start playing under the hood it would be like trying to put a circle into a square.

But it's a good thought.

If l worked in a circus l could!!

The last time l tried to change plugs in a friends car we had to go from beneath the car to reach all but two plugs.

I thought a tune up was a lot more then that. Wire l can do, plugs, if l can reach them.

What else is there.

I thought a full tune up was over $300!!!!!!!!

At a dealer a tunup includes hooking to a computer and checking everything. ;shrug

I was a mechanic most of my life and on your car all you can do is replace the plugs .

Nothing to check on a car that you can't feel siting in the drivers seat.
#8 plug is the worst and you would need a snap-on 5/8 swivel socket an old plug wire boot and a short extention.( the streight plug wire boot will help you twist the plugs in and out with little effort ,or use a piece of vaccum hose.
To replace the wires on your car I would not recomend it.

That's what l thought!

The next time my car goes in l will have the service advisor check it out. The service advisor was a past member of my corvette club.

We had the plugs & plug wires changed, throttle body and air sensors cleaned about a year ago and that brought new life to our LT-1. And we thought it was running fine when we took it in. It was a bit pricy at the dealership though.

Aren't dealerships charging anywhere from $70-90 an hour for labor? With prices like that, I'm willing to suffer!:L

And as for hooking a computer up, you can run down to Auto Zone and they'll hook up the diagnostics for you to see if any codes are present.

A tune up in my book( and what I am going through right now) includes plugs (wires if you need them) ,TB, IAC ,MAF cleaning. Depending on milage a radiator flush and fill and the same for the tranny(auto). Possibly a 3 stage injector clean if you have any idea that your injectors are leaky and definately some injector cleaner in the tank.
