vin tag

does anyone know why a vin tag would be rusted. previous owner told me he has seen this on other c4's

You mean other than the obvious? There's water getting to it. Maybe the seal around the windshield is leaking? The seal around the windshield on my 94 looked terrible, cracked, split, etc...but it did not leak.

Probably not a big deal, unless there's some seaweed in there, or some dried up jellyfish.

I've seen it here and there, and on other cars as well. I've seen a few C3's in my day that didn't really have much left of the vin tag.
