This is my first 'modern' Vette ; prior to this, i was a full fledged C3 guy. I love virtually everthing about my new 2006 Coupe except the irratating road noise when theres no music on. With the radio / music on...it tends to drown it out somewhat, but, often i like to have nothing on. Frankly, i didnt notice the degree of road noise when i took a couple 2006's for a testdrive ; it was only after i took delivery of mine that i became horrified. I was told it was the runflats, so, i got rid of them and put Michelin PS2's on -- made very very little improvement. My next step is to put more insulation material under the rear carpetting , over the wheel wells, IN the wheelwells behind the plastic trim, and underneath the car on the back end. Im hoping for the best.

For all the effort and expense GM went to so the 2006 vette would offer great creature comforts, luxury, refinement, performance, etc.. i think they should have put more emphasis into making it far quieter. Do u share my sentiments ? Im told that C5's are even worse however.

I agree with you about the road noise. Im thinking about changing the exhaust system to make it a bit louder and give it bit more hp (like it needs it). This should drown out any road noise. I do like your idea of putting in some sound proofing under the carpet. Try a marine store such as West Marine they sell engine room sound proofing. I have some at home and I am going to give it a try. Ill let you know how its works Dave :)

REPLY: Be very careful about choosing an aftermarket Catback exhaust ; many of them deliver a drone/hum at a certain rpm like the Route 66 does between 1500-1800 rpms. Im getting mine put back to factory. Ill look into West Marine. Thanks. Dave

it is caused by the run flats and the C-5s were worse. they have to add weight to the corvette to get the noise out and this will hurt it CAFE so would you like to spend $1-3K for a gas guzzler tax to get rid of the noise?

Road Noise

I agree w/ "Mad Duck." Get an aftermarket exhaust that will drown out the road noise. You'll still be hearing noise but it will be sweet!

Concrete road noise is the worst, blacktop does not seem as bad and gravel is whole other story! :rotfl

I agree, put on good throaty exhaust system or crank up the tunes. :lou

Later . . . . . .
6 Shooter

I put on a GHL exhaust to muffle the run-flat noise, but a partition behind the seats seemed to help isolate the noises reverberating back there in the cargo area.

REPLY: It must have been a partial partition in your Coupe right ? Otherwise you wouldnt be able to see out the back window. If so, how high does it go up from the floor and where did you get it from ? Thanks.

I wondered that, too...

I put the Corsa Sport exhaust on and don't notice it until I am on concrete freeway with the rains grooves cut into it. What the heck, I didn't buy this car for creature comforts anyway.

It's as high as the cargo cover, and actually meets the cover to form a visual trunk. I got it here: http://www.exoticvette.com. Click on the picture link on the lower right.

REPLY: I thought it was caused by the runflats which is why i changed them out to Michelin PS2's. Virtually no difference in the road noise. The C6 doesnt need more weight thats for sure...but it does need more/better sound insulation for the back half of the car . Im going to do what i can to improve upon that.

There is a company out there with a product called Brown Bread or somethning close to that. It is a silver coated sound deadening product. Check it out on Google. I had some installed in the doors and trunk of my Subaru STi, works great. A lot of after market sound system installers use it.

Is this problem only on the coupe, or is it consistant (different rear cargo area of course) on the C6 vert as well?

I've got a coupe and I don't have a sound problem; I guess some people are just real sensitive or have their hearing aids turned up too high.:L

Don't discount the possibility that your differential has started to howl. Before I had the C6 or the C5 I had a Z28 whose diff got so gradually noisier that I really didn't notice it until it was totally outrageous.

Dealer found the pinion and ring gear were both abnormally worn. Replacing them made the car totally quiet.
