Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Well I did it :-)

Congrats on your Vette. It is nice to have another Cross-Fire member. If ya ever need anything done to that car I can give you the name of the guy who set my Cross-Fire up. Man he made my car sing. Good Luck and drive the tires off that beauty.

You are going to love the Shark. The 82 was great with the classic body and EFI. I liked mine so much that I gave it to my son.
Enjoy:w

Good Deal!

Glad you found one you wanted!

I would second doing a compression check

Really? Hmmmmm my 81 has 103000 miles on it and it runs great but does idle rough. I figured it was just a carburetor issue and when it got bad enough I was going to deal with it. Is there anyway I can determine if this is a problem with mine without tearing into anything??

Key aspect is to see the compression spread between cylinders to see how #3 compares with all the rest.

My 81, which I purchased new in 81 had one factory design problem that showed up at about 51K miles; that being the #3 valve cam lobe rounding out as a result of the higher running temperture caused by the exhust gas recovery system that routes the hot gas up into the intake manifold near #3 cylinder. The shop that replaced the cam told me that the factory had failed to properly harden the cam to compensate for the increase in head temperature. The replacement cam evidently must have been better since I have since put about 75K miles on it. The cam failure was evident by a rough idle that caused me to take it to a local vette shop to find the cause. Your 82 may not be suspect, if the factory had corrected it mistake by then. I never hear of any recall related to a cam / idle problem, you may also want to read any computer error code that may be stored in you control module.

The cam is in the block, not the head. EGR valves have been in use since 1973, so any related failures would have certainly been corrected by 1981. It's very possible you did have a cam failure in regards to the #3 cyl., it just wasn't because of the EGR. EGR valves do not generate any excess heat into the engine. the engine produces exhaust, that's it's job. recirculating the existing exhaust back into the engine does not cause any excess heat. Pre EGR cars have an exhaust crossover in the intake regardless, in order to heat the choke. most likely you just had a crap cam from the factory, and the #3 cyl lobes went flat. This happens, periodically.

Congrats on the shark!!!!! In the next few years you will be looking for a second one to keep the current one company!!!! Two vettes are twice the fun!!!! All kidding aside enjoy it!!!!:wDont forget to wave!!!!

Thanks all! Now if I can just work out the logistics to pick it up!! its becoming a nightmare with less than dependable people :-( I really wanted it for tomorrow night - so I am going to keep trying!

I am in NH. Send me the keys and I'll go get it. I'll make sure all is good. :D

LOL but how will you get home??? and more importantly - how will I get my car? ;-)

Towing Company

Morning!! OK, if your still trying to get your car..do a google search of all towing companies in your area..If that doesn't work, then go to your local gas station. they WILL know of people or they may themselves go. Be aware that the charge will probably be a few hundred bucks depending upon how far they have to go...

PICS..PICS..PICS.......lets see them!!!!!!!

I am not that far from Newburyport lol. I am in Manchester NH. How far is the car from you?

Rough Idle Up-date

The point intended was that the EGR valve was not the cause of the Cam going flat, but as reported by the third party repair shop whom specialized in vettes, that they had seen a number of the cam's going bad at #3 as a result of the consentration of more heat from the return exhust gas. The fix being a new cam hardened to with stand the greater abient heat. Either way the new cam corrected the rough idle. A negative side affect was and still is a problem to get the oil pan to not dip oil when you park it.
