My 1991 L98 has about 33,000 miles. Before I bought the car, the previous owner had the brake rotors machined and new brake pads installed. That was at 32,000 miles per the receipt.

Now, the brakes on my C4 squeal when I apply the brakes and as I slow to a stop. Also, it groans loudly when the car comes to a complete stop then I ease up and let the car move a few feet forward.

I don't know what type of brake pads the car got the last time the pads where replaced. Do any of you have any recommendation as to what brake pads to use? I'm looking for quiet stops and stopping power. I don't autocross nor road race.

I'm putting in Bosch pads this week. Paid just under $100 for all fours. They're premium pads, not designed for racing but they give you exceptional stopping power.

I couldn't justify spending all that money on Hawk pads so I went with Bosch.

Do the turned rotors and new pads only have 1000 miles on them or was that a typo?

With only 1000 miles on the pads, the squeal is either the brake pad compound or the shop did not properly grease the pads when they were installed.

Go back to the shop that did the brakes and ask about the squeal. If it is the compound of the pad then you will have to change them to stop the squeal. On the other hand it could be as simple as a bit of copper grease applied to the back of the pad.

Good luck and silent braking.

Thanks Spanishvetts.

I called back the shop that did the brake work. The rotors and pads have only 1,000 miles on them. They said they used the Bendix brand of pads which they swore was OEM. Hmmmm??? They also said to check and see if copper grease (orange color?) was applied properly and if not, it probably needs it.

I'll check on this today.

I put new pads on the front last summer. Napa Ceramix. They are pricey but not as bad as the GM ceramic pads. Some say they are the exact same pad as GM. I am very happy with them so far. low dust and great stopping power with no squeel.
