Help! What is this part?

I believe thats the fan switch. Does your cooling fan come on when the a/c is turned on?

good question. I'll check that out but its only 45 degrees here today :). Also, should there be a wire running to it? Cause just appears to have a cap on it.. no obvious wires running to it. thanks...

Ya.it should have a wire running to it. Thats the sensor that turns the fan on and off. If you're fan works (i'm guessing it does or you'd be overheating),the wiring must have been modified, like maybe to turn the fan on when the key is turned to acc or on,or some people wire there fans to a toggle switch.
You should check for codes. Do a search for checking for codes,it's simple. Need a paper clip, pen and paper, and the list of codes which you'll find when you do the search.

well this is odd. The fan does come on as the engine warms up and/or ac turned on. There are no wires anywhere near this sensor... No codes either. Cars cooling system seems to operate as expected. Doesn't over heat. Guess I'll check the wiring diagrams in manual...see if i can locate them...

well, according to my manual it should be the temp sensor controling the fan. I just ran the car, when it got to 110c the fan came on.... I'm missing something obviously....
Thanks

Z51 package had an aux fan in front of the radiator for additional cooling.

'85 is one off year.
The computer controls the fan ( which is working correctly ) but the switch shown is a mechanical over ride set to turn the fans on a set temp
wire to switch comes up from the bottom out of the harness to the starter motor / knock sensor
86 - 89 the computer controls the main fan and the switch ( if fitted ) is for the aux fan ( if fitted )Also relocated to drv side head

Knock sensor is directly below switch shown ( in block )
Thanks! After some poking around the internet found exactly what you said, fan controled by computer and block sensor is a mech overide. Also managed to find the wire...you would think the wiring could have been done a little different to make access easier... guess that's part of the joy of owning a vet. That or engineers don't actually repair these babies....

Thanks!:beer

Is wired like that so you don't have to remove the wire to get rocker cover off Everything on pass side is wired from underneath
