Freak Of Nature

Guest
Car's been sleeping the past few days (getting worked on). Giving it a tune-up later in the day. What should I all change & with what? Don't know much about these kind of things, just want to make sure I get what I pay for & the car gets healthy.:D

1984 Automatic w/54K. Sat ALOT before I bought it. Running a little ruff. Smokes a little when started & here a constant ticking ever since I got the oil changed. A mechanic said the oil looks thin & that could be causing it. Gonna put something better in it. Any suggestions on things I should do?

Few other questions...

I want to order a new exhast in the next few days. It seams Borla & Flowmaster are in the lead for aftermarket exahsts? What one do you think is better? Just want my car to stop sounding like a honda & start screaming. LOL!

Shiftkit... Should I or not? Been thinking about it lately. Everybody I talk to has differant opinions. You guys are the pros! What do you suggest? The only time I drive my car is to work. Don't sit in alot of traffic & love having powerful shifts when I hit it.

Thanks!

How much do you want to spend on an exhaust, and how loud do you want it to be? I'm very happy with my PowerEffects catback, but a new one will set you back about a grand. It's got a great sound, esp. from outside the car, but does have some resonance or echoing at certain RPMs.

I have eleven vehicle and each time we change oil we use a synthetic blend and add a quart of Lucas oil treatment, I have a little over a quarter million miles on my F-150 and have never had an engine problem. We usually keep our vehicles for 3 - 4 hundred thousand. We change oil and filter every 5,000 to 6,000 miles

Not picky about the price. If I see a nice one in my currant budget I'll buy it now. If it's a too much I'll just wait till next pay & get the nicer one. I just want one that'll have a nice roar to it. Still want it to sound decent on the highway though. I was looking at the ones where you can adjust it. Are they nice? Forget the brand, but they are pretty popular.

There are a couple adjustable ones. The PowerEffects I have is one of them, though it's only adjustable from outside the car. It's pretty simple; there's a flap near the end of each muffler (which doesn't look like a muffer) that gets opened and closed by a knob on the outside. When it's closed, the exhaust is forced through a spiral-wound sound barrier. When it's open, the exhaust goes pretty much straight through. I honestly don't notice a lot of difference between open and closed, though there is some. It does sound great, and it looks like it belongs on the car. The tailpipes are black powdercoated paired ovals (essentially two ovals connected on one side) and they just look NICE.

Couple people here have done the sidepipes that this company makes (called Side Effects); I've heard them at Carlisle and they sound and look totally awesome, but there are some clearance issues (one guy at Carlisle last year said he had to raise his Vette by an inch to keep from hitting every speed bump around, for example).

Thanks for the advice. Will look into them later when I get off work. I would LOVE to have the side pipes. Was thinking about them the other day. I live in Pittsburgh and they just would NOT last too long on the car. I'm gonna save the tears & go with a regular exhast system... For now.

So... Anybody got any advice/opinions about it?

Last year I replaced the entire exhaust system with stainless. 2 1/2" y-pipe from mid america, high flow cat from mid america and the borla cat back from ecklers, sure the mufflers were 500.00, the front y was around 200.00 and the cat was 150.00.

All told I got a grand in a system I will never have to change, and if I do it has a lifetime warranty.

If you've got the money, do what Eagle did and go with the Borla. All the catback systems give you pretty much the same gain in terms of performance. But their tones and construction are different.

I went with Flowmaster because I just couldn't spring for the Borla's.:L

Well... Flushed all the fluids, gave a complete tune-up w/ a new K&N Air Filter, and must say it's running ALOT better. The only thing I'm wondering about now is... When the car is running, it has a clicking type sound comming from around the fuel injector??? Not sure what that is all about? Any idea?

BTW... Any suggestions on a shift kit yet?:cool
