Anybody have any advice on thread sealers for:

And is it nessessary on some of these.

  1. Intake bolts
  2. TB bolts
  3. EGR bolts
  4. pelnum bolts
  5. fuel rail bolts
Thanks Mart

I use Permatex non-hardening high-temp sealer. Comes in a little white tube.

1. Yes (most of the bolts protrude into the interior of the head where it's open).
2. No. These bolts are either close-ended or open to the outside
3. No. These are closed.
4. No.
5. No.

Basically, if you can see through where the bolt goes into someplace where there's oil or coolant or something you want to keep in, you need to seal the bolts. Heads, manifold, water pump, knock sensor, temp sensors, etc.

This stuff:

High-temp thread sealant

It's specifically for things like head bolts and stuff that contacts gas and oil. It'll work fine on coolant bolts, too.

If you can find it, buy the big tube. I've gone through three of the little ones already, and they're not really cheap.

Incidently, if you're doing your intake manifold, I cannot recommend highly enough a product called "The Right Stuff" gasket maker. It's a pressurized can of dark grey gunk that will make PERFECT beads of gasket. It was pointed out by a couple people here on the forum, and I just tried it yesterday. So unbelievably better than even a caulk-tube, because since it's under pressure it comes out at a constant rate.

Thanks Rich,

I have seen a couple of other threads on the right stuff, so I bought the calk tube of it, I can't find the preasureized stuff up here.

"The Right Stuff"
Ain´t it great. Over here it goes for about $14.50 for the small can, worth every penny.

*SEARCH* for the pressurized stuff. That's what makes it so good - it's hard to maintain a steady bead with the caulk tube (I've laid enough regular caulk to know this)...

If you really can't find any, I'll be happy to purchase some cans for you (probably one would do) and send it by ground shipment (can't send pressurized stuff by airmail).

Or if you can cross the border and find an AutoZone in Buffalo, I know that chain carries it.

Spanishvetts, it's $13 here for the small can... so you're not that bad off.

OK OK leave us Canadians alone, this damm stuff is like $25 CA per small tube.

I think I have a lead on the preasureized stuff, thanks Rich.

Mart

$25 CA. That's what, 59 cents US? :) I should have you send ME some cans.

Sorry, couldn't resist! Went to France last summer when the Euro was high and the dollar low, so I had the same experience :( .
