Did they use a standard, high volume, or high pressure pump?

Sledghammer alternator mounting location

Looking at some sledgehammer pics I see they moved the alternator where the smog pump would be on an L-98.

I guess I am looking for any info on how they did this. Anyone have any ideas?

I am ripping my engine apart and doing some mock up work on putting my turbos on finally, and It would give me lots of room if I could get the alt out of the way. but when I set the alternator in place wher ethe smog pump was, it hits the valve cover and looks like I wont be able to get the pulley in line with the rest. hmm...

Melling High Volume - Hope this helps :m

Looking at the gage at different rpms, I would say it's both high pressure high volume.

As far as your alternator location goes. Here's a pic of my supecharged engine. Notice how the alt. is installed. Don't know if that may help your space situation. Just an idea.

Most small-block Chevrolets need the stock oil pump modified with a high-pressure relief valve spring. This includes engines in Callaways or other twin-turbo C4s. High volume oil pumps are great for putting money in the pocket of aftermarket companies but they don't offer any reliability or durability advantage to an engine like the one being discussed. In fact, they might even cost performance in that there's more parasitic power loss in moving that higher volume of oil through the pump. That all high-perf. engines need a high volume pump is urban lengend propagated by companies which make oil pumps.

I'd disassemble and inspect your L98s pump. If its parts are in good condition, reassemble the pump but use a different pressure relief valve spring PN 3848911. This spring rasies the oil pressure to 65-70 psi mid-range rpms or above.
