my 94 C4 auto trans needs a coolant flush + replacement what type+brand of anti freeze do i use? will just any anti freeze work ?or do i have to use that new (orange color) 50,000 mile coolant?
thanks boonie

Check the coolant in there right now and if it's green, keep using the green stuff. I don't think there is any difference between brands of antifreeze.

What he said ^^^^^.

Add Redline Water Wetter for a little extra protection.

Avoid Dexcool like the plague. Do a thorough flush, use two gallons of conventional ethylene-glycol and two gallons of distilled water. (Actual system capacity is 3.8 gal.) Also use one pt. of Pencool 3000 supplemental cooling additive. Repeat in two years at the most.

Why do you say to Avoid Dexcool like the plague, I have not used it but am just wondering whats wrong with it.:confused

IMHO, there is really nothing wrong with DexCool. GM started to use it in 95 and it's in all GM products ever since.

The biggest problew with converting to DexCool when theoriginal system used the green ethlyene glycol coolant is that the two coolants are not compatible. Failure to completely flush out the old coolant is one reason why people have problems with DexCool.

There have been intake gaskets going out blamed on the Dexcool. Don't know if there is anything to back that up.;shrug

I have converted my 85 and 93 to DexCool. There was a posting on a DexCool gallon that you can go backwards to 93 for a changeover, mostly I believe because of use of Aluminum blocks. DexCool, or any 5 yr RED, will be the same. I also did it to my 85, just to extend the life, or time intervals for coolant change. Now you can get 'green' 5 yr stuff. Make sure you flush out the 2yr before you go to 5yr, as they don't mix

Check and see how many lawsuits there have been related to Dexcool and resulting damage. Even among extended life coolants, which I consider problematic anyways, it's probably the worst. I have extensive experience with seeing the results of long term coolant use of all types, as well as inside sources in the antifreeze industry that verify what I already knew. And that is that there's still nothing better or safer for your vehicle than using conventional ethylene-glycol and changing it regularly.
