If there was absolutly no problem, Mobil could simply had said "If your engine doen't leak now, it won't leak when you switch to Mobil One. " But they didn't because they can't gaurantee that.
No company with good lawyers would ever gaurantee something like that :) If fact they would not even address it if it weren't for the old wives tails floating around. I had a small leak in my 90 before the switch, still have it, has not gotten better and has not gotten worse.

Valvoline 10W40 all year round, Fram oil filter. ;)

Mobil1 switching to Valvoline Max Life

I have Mobil 1 (non- synthetic) 5W-30 in now. When I first got the car I put Mobil 1 Synthetic and started seeing more leaks.

Next Spring will try the Valvoline Max Life 5W-30.

I use the AC Delco Oil Filter. The car has 50k miles and the engine a bit less.

I do run Mobil 1 Synthetic in my truck and love it! Also have the Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil in the tranny and both diffs.

Come On Guys - It's American Steel

Why in the world would you want to treat good ole American steel (o.k., cast iron) like it was some wimpey butt imported aluminum 4-banger engine?

The Chevy V-8 is bullet proof, made with lots of heavy metal and built to very accomadating tolerances designed to let it run under most conditions for many, many miles.

So why get your panties in a bunch and worry so much about using exotic and expensive oils when the Chevy V-8 engine was built to run on just about any oil, as long as you change it every now and then. It would be different if you had some sissy engine under the hood that was built to exacting standards and tolerances.

Enjoy the Chevy V-8 for what it is, a fairly big, clunkey, infinately forgiving engine that don't need no extra frilly gizmo gadgets and unnecesary pampering.

Use Valvoline, Havoline, Castrol, Penzoil, Quaker State, Mobil One or any other quality brand of motor oil and oil filter, but for heaven's sake, please don't treat your Chevy V-8 like it was your kid sister. Put oil in and go run the thing - don't sweat the microscopic stuff when it really don't matter. Enjoy your Corvette. Don't overthink it.

I'll go with what "Roy" just said.....Being a Mechanic for some
25+ Year's now it simply does come down to using a "Quality"
Oil that you Like and Trust....and keeping it "Clean" !!

For Me it's Every 3,000 on my '87 Vette,and my S/10 Extreme,
with a QUALITY Filter, and I use a Mobil 1.

98 Tahoe - Mobil1 5W30 year round
01 Jeep - Mobil1 10W40 year round
69 Vette - Mobil1 15W50 Year round
(but it sleeps in 60 degree garage all winter)

In engines with cats I use Red Line 10W30. In engines without cats I use Red Line SAE30 Racing Oil. For engines that see more than 10,000 mi. annually, I use an extended drain interval of 18,000 miles. For engines that see less than 10,000 mi annually, I change the oil every two years.

I change filters at every 3000-5000 miles depending on the engine size and the oil filter capacity. I use ACDelco Ultraguard Filters (UPF52 or UPF1218) on every engine except the LT5 in my ZR-1. On that I use a Mobil 1 filter.

Pennzoil 5w-30 and Fram filters from Walmart. Change every 5000 mi. Easy to remember when to change. I have run several Chevy and Ford small V-8's to 140,00 mi. with no repairs. Usually are about a qt. low at 4000 mi into the change. I have a 02 Chevy pickup w/6.0 motor. It's change oil warning light usually comes on at about 6200 mi. One note, most of my driving is hiway. The new 406 going in my 79 will get the same treatment.

Oil

In north Texas where I live ,It`s cold one minute hot the next.for 30 years I`ve been useing chevon`s Delo 400 -30W/ AC Delco filters in all my GM products. Thats all I use ,Going down the strip, Driving day to day,Or letting my cars be week end warriors.I race for fun ,Stock clearances/And clean oil is the ticket in my motors. Use Good Quality Motor oil And filters /and sticking with them in any engine program ,is the key to a successfull motor. Everyone has there brand ,Chevon is mine :w EYESOFTEX:dance

You da man Roy
:D

But I have bought in to the improved filters out these days though.
K&N and others that filter smaller particles. It May or may not make a difference, I just consider it cheap insurance in the long haul.

does viscosity matter ?

I would think that small drips could be prone to become larger leaks if synthetics generally have less viscosity than regular motor oils ? You can bet a manufacturer's going to try and create 'wiggle room' - - but after switching on an older motor, I'd think expansion rates on gaskets and seals might be different-- notwithstanding the change in viscosity ??
Thanks to all for the discussion.

synthetic?

any oil that has a petroleum base is not a true synthetic, imho. I've been sold on a few different brands over the last 40 years and would continue using one of them if Amzoil were not available. The increased viscosity, protection, heat protection, failure rate, and long life sold me...and America relys a little less on the foreign oil (I know...very darn little!!) my .02 worth.
Incidentially, I was always a Penzoil fan but found that some vehicles, like my F150 gets diarearh unless it gets Texaco Havoline (Motorcraft). I switched to Amzoil in my 150000+ mile vette 2 years ago and am very pleased....Also, you can lower your thermostat to 160 cause you don't need to burnoff the bad stuff associated w/reg. oil ....and if you get into a "shoot out" with a pesky BMW, Mousetang, or etc...and get the Temp over 200-220 for15-20 minutes...you don't have to change the broken down reg. oil. thanks, jim
