Hi everyone, I am about to replace a wheel bearing on my c4 and would like to know before i start if this is something that i shouldnt try to do myself or if there are going to be any known problems i should expect to encounter?

cheers in advance guys and girls.

Can't comment on the fronts but the rears aren't too bad. Make sure you have the following; PB Blaster, Brake Parts Cleaner, 36mm wheel bearing socket, T55 torx bit, various extentions ratchets breaker bars ect.

The 36 mm nut comes off the outside of the wheel bearing. Don't loose the cotterpin cap or the washer and use a new cotter pin for reassembly. There are three T55 Torx bolts that keep the wheel bearing attached to the spline. You have to reach them from the inside (the halfshaft side of the hub assembly) and rotate the drive shaft just a bit to line everything up. Use the PB Blaster to help free up the bolts. Everything will come right apart. Re-assembly is just as easy ... a little time consuming, but not bad.

Hope this helps

I forgot to mention you probabally need an Impact wrench to get the outside nut off. The torque specs for the Torx bolts is 66 ft/lbs and for the outer nut is 164 ft/lbs (automatic) and 200 ft/lbs (manual).

Torque

A breaker bar on the 36mm socket with a 4' length of 2" dia pipe slid over the breaker bar handle easily removes the large nut.
But be sure to tighten with accurate torque.

i know this is kind of old thread. but do you have to take the brakes all apart for the bearing change too?

The front one's are easy'r than rear!! Junk!! Yes you have to take Calp. off!!

i have both a haynes and gm service manual, the haynes talks like you have to take the whole thing off on the back and do it on a bench or some tihng? but it seems to me once you get the brake and rotor off it just a matter of taking the bolts out, and reinstalling.

Instructions

I've been badly mislead by a Haynes manual and tossed it.
