Being new to the corvette scene means ignorance might be a factor....

So my first big question "where do I look for rust?"

welcome to CAC - I am a new owner but the man I bought my car from showed me a spot to check under the door sort of near the area under where the door handle would be - that edge area - underneath, something about water run off. I am sure the others can fill you in more.

On C3's I have heard to always at the underneath side infront of the rear tires.

Your best bet is to get your 79 up onto a lift and take a good look underneath. There's a variety of areas which can be problematic.... around the rear tires, close to the firewall, at the front crossmember, you name it. Then there's the areas which you can't readily see... like the birdcage (the steel reinforcing around the passenger area... ie: from the windshield frame to the door posts, across under the sills and up to the t-tops). I don't mean to sound scary but it's possible for a Vette to look excellent sitting on the ground and have the frame rusted out completely.

Anywhere a Mustang parks!!!:D

Welcome to the CAC and I'm sure the rust experts will give you a rundown on the most rust prone areas of your C3.

Check in front of the rear tire where the frame kicks up and below the door. Also, take a white buisiness card and slide it under the windshield molding. Proceed sliding the card up the A pillar, across the top of the windshield and down the other A-pillar checking for signs of brown (rust). See if the VIN tag is rusty also. If you find rust in these areas..I'd walk.

Look in front of the rear wheels all the framework. Open your doors and look (Flashlight) up along where the hingers are mounted. My 80 had no rust except up in the door hinge area where there were some welded seams.:)
