Gang,

In a 1973 there is absolutely no room to store the T-tops and still have 2 speakers to listen to the stereo.

So...any solutions as to mini speakers, customized speaker setups, or anyway to hear the tunes other than from the front speakers?

When I cought the car it came with 2 speakers already in box enclosures - the only problem is I can't put the tops in the back - NO ROOM!

Mike

You just need to trim the boxes so they don't come so for forward. Tops fit with inches to spare.

What I did in mine is build a box across the width. It houses both speakers and is covered in the same colour carpet. It is also raised up to allow room for the tops. I can't take a photo as the car is in storage for the winter but it looks and works well.
It also does not impair operation of the sun screen.

You can buy these commercially to.

Good luck

What you could just do is put some replacement speakers from the stock back. That's what I think I'im going to do. Just put in a new head unit and replace the two back speakers. Hopefully the easiest way. I would like a CD player and decent quality, but I personally don't need those boxes. ;)

Good luck!!

TR,

I don' think they came with rear speakers until 78 so us earlier guys are looking for ways to add the rears.

The earlier cars might not have come with factory rears, but the location should be about the same as the later C3's, correct? What sits in the little pocket on the earlier C3's that would make it difficult to place speakers where they are located on the later C3? Personally, I like the idea of the suspended box as that is what I am doing for my subs. I am going to place dual 5 1/4" components in the door panels and just disconnect the 4x6's in the dash. Come to think of it, you could put some pretty good components in the doors and totally remove the rear speakers! I know there will be those that argue a different opinion, but I think rear speakers are more for rear passengers. I don't know about you, but I haven't had any rear passengers in my car! Okay, I did once, but that was back in college.... In any case, good luck on whatever you decide.

I was able to squeeze some 6x9's w/o any boxes right behind the wheelwells...nice spot, doesn't take up any room...
Problem is I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet and see how it sounds...

I've seen others put the 6x9's above the wheel wheels. Looks good but mine were already done and work well.

This subject was posted in the last month or so. Do a search and you'll find a wider example of what has been done.

i got 2 6x9's in mine and the tops fit fine....i dont have a digital camera so no pic....but i cut a board that fits behind the wheel wells and covered it in a black fuzzy material....i have black interior.....the board only goes in from the top without the speaker boxes on it....then i made two boxes just big enough to house the x-plode speakers i put in.....the boxes were covered as well....the i hook up the wires and screw the boxes into the wood ....the boxes fit in the area on top of the well and when assembled there is no way that it will come out....either pulling it out or in a front end collision......they stay put.....i also cut a hole in the board so i have a dome light.
i had to cut the bezel to put in the x-plode cd- player , but the bezel is not that expensive to replace if needed. it can be done for much less than the boxes you see in the books. good luck mike.:bu

Here is another one for you.. and I can fit my "T" tops in just like normal..

I think that's something like what I'm going to do, SLICKMAN. Just replace the ones I already have in the back. What products (speakers and head unit) did you use for your Vette? How are they? Are you satisfied? Would you recommend them to me?

Isn't the 1978 a bit different from the 1973, space wise?

I am not sure about this one, but I thought the actual storage area was about the same under the shade at least for the coupes. The reason the '78-82's look bigger is because of the large rear window glass. Perhaps I am off the mark here, but it makes sense that a speaker box designed to fit the back wall of a '78 wouls also work on a '77.

Stallion, here is my head unit, the speakers are Pioneer 6x9 3 ways.

Pegasys, LASTRIDE is right..:D The area uner the shade is the same accross the board on all C3's however, with the large window on the 78 and 79's (the 80 - 82 were a bit larger I think) makes it look biger. The sound however is much better on the 78's and 79's because of the larger area. The speaker setup will work on all but, on the pre 78's you will not be able to see the speaker setup much if at all.
