Which Gasoline to use?

I'm relatively new to the forum and have seen several posts on the effects of poor gas on our fuel gauge / senders. The consistant remarks seem to be to use a quality fuel like Chevron. Aside from obvious "Mom & Pop" type of stations, what are some of the name brand stations that use poor quality fuel?? and some of the best for that matter. I usually use Shell and I'm currently on a 1000+ mile trip through Florida,(by the way, 74 degrees and sunny in Ft. Myers!! ) Yesterday I filled up with Hess because I was running on fumes and it was all I could find. guess what?,, at around a half tank, my guage started acting up and fluctuating!!ad
any input, for good and bad stations would be appreciated.

The gasolines you mentioned recommended by members (as well as C4C5Specialist) are known as Top Tier Gasolines. I personally use Chevron Supreme in my Corvette.

Put a bottle of Techron or Berrymans in from time to time!

We could probably add Sunoco and Citgo. These are two very popular fuel companys up here in the Northeast. And yes - periodically use some Techron additive.

Remo is correct. I use Sunoco or Citgo exclusively, and add Techron every other tank full. My fiance started to use Techron in her Grand Prix after talking with C4C5 Specialist at last years Cruisefest, and she can't believe the change in performance.

This subject comes up from time to time, and certainly a spate of fuel level indicators gone whacky last year in these forums bumped the issue up in terms of it's level of interest.

Top Tier Gasolines are your best bet. Here's some other thoughts:

1. Look for brands that include Techron. Obviously, Chevron has it, but Chevron isn't available in all areas. (Here in Colorado, Chevron was bought out of the market by Amoco.) I use Shell (with V-power, their name for the Techron additive). I've heard that in various parts of the country, Sunoco and Amoco will add Techron, too.

2. Don't go buying gas from a retailer like WalMart or Costco, or even this new trend of supermarkets which sell gas. They buy their gas from the lowest cost supplier at the time of purchase. Sometimes it may be Chevron, sometimes Citgo, sometimes others. Thus, the consitency and quality of the gasoline will vary.

3. If you see a truck delivering gas at station, even your regular "branded" gas station, don't buy it right then. Adding the gas to the storage tank from the trunk will stir up the dirt and sediments from the bottom of the tank, and that will be suspended in the gas for a time, meaning it will make it into your gas tank if you refuel right then. Wait about a half an hour to an hour to allow those sediments to settle back down to the bottom of the tank.

I added some techron this morning, and tonight after about another 300 miles, everything seems normal. Can too much techron cause any damage??, I've used it several times, about every 5,000 miles.. should I use it more frequently as a "preventative maintenance" product?

Well, I wouldn't recommend buying Techron by the crate and filling your entire tank with it. :L

But if you add a bottle every other fuel stop, it will do it's job nicely. It's intended to supplement the detergents used in Top Tier fuels. You could, conceiveably, add a bottle of Techron every fill up without damage. I guess it depends on your budget for fuel. More than that (like two bottles at fuel up) would be redundant and you reach a point of diminishing returns.

(but I do add a bottle of the best stuff on earth ...BG 44K... every 4 thousand miles)

HI there,
There are directions on the bottle that you can follow.
Just remember, each car is different and will require different usage to either clean out the engine, or simply keep it clean.
Being an 02Z, I would go to the interval on the bottle after those 2 that you have used.
