I have a 1971 LT-1 with the stock transistorized ignition.
8203 with ballast resistor or
8202 without ballast resistor?
(It must be red)

I believe your 71 w/ TI probably has an original resistor wire (cloth-covered resistor wire) as functioning ballast. My MSD catalog has this to say about the ballast resistor (MSD P/N 8214) that's included with some msd part numbers: "Points ignition systems require this ballast resistor included with this kit in addition to any original resistor or resistor wiring." ... AND ... "With a stock points style ignition, a ballast resistor must be placed in-line with the positive terminal of the coil."

8214 is the ballast resistor supplied w/ blaster coils and has 0.8 ohm resistance.

8202 is simply a red blaster2 coil.

8223 is a red blaster coil similar to 8203, but is known as blaster3 and has a high, tower connection for secondary coil wire ... as opposed to the socket both your OE 71 coil and blaster2 has.

8203 is a kit with red 8202 coil and a ballast and a boot & terminal for secondary coil wire.

8200 is kit nearly identical to 8203 ... EXCEPT the coil is chromed.

I believe the ballast resistor that is supplied with some MSD blaster coils should not be used on cars that came OE with GM TI ignition. However, I suggest you email Joe Lapille at MSD jlapille@msdignition.com for his expert recommendation. Make sure Joe understands you're referring to early TI ... and not HEI.

All above coils are oil-filled and must be mounted as near vertical as possible to avoid uncovering windings and overheating ... stock manifold mount is near vertical enough and is OK. If you must run a canister-style coil, but don't want to worry about oil & windings & angles & overheating ... then consider MSD P/N 8222 ... High Vibration Coil that is epoxy-filled ... it's BLACK & has a socket for secondary coil wire. We're running 8222 in our circle track car.
