wiring

I have two questions, first I have a loose wire next to my starter. I need to know where this might possibly go. This wire, which starts off brown, comes from the wire bundle to the back of transmission, then a black wire comes off it next to starter. Next question, I have a good ammeter, but does'nt work where do the wire come from to the ammeter so I can check. Thanks for any help.
