Greetings all....
I have a Clutch question...
How do you measure if you have a 10.5 or an 11 inch clutch...
I know this sounds stupid.. however.. I bought a bellhousing & flywheel on E bay.. getting ready to drop the 64 engine in.. and the flywheel doesn't fit inside the bellhousing. Whoops

AND

The surface measures 13 inches across the clutch face... what does one do?

Vigman... Your back.. you think this thread can beat out the last for the number of pages:L :L As for your dilima I think that flywheel may be your down fall.. Does the bellhousing bolt up with no problems to your SB?? As for the flywheel a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel should work.. I think that 153 is the correct one for a STD and 168 for a Powerglide.. I could have that backwards.. I'm sure someone will chime in with the correct info if I'm wrong... Dave..

Oh and on the 10.5" or 11" clutch. They should both fit inside a standard size bellhousing.

:confused

Maybe this will help with the flywheel issue. Starting in 1962 there were two flywheels used. The 168 tooth and 153 tooth. The 168 tooth wheel used 10-1/2" or 11" clutches but the 153 tooth used only the 10-1/2" or smaller clutches.

Starting in 1962, starters are mounted on the block. There are two end castings used to correctly position the starter relative to the flywheel size. Starter end castings vary with flywheel diameter. The starter casting with bolts in line (at right angle to the engine certerline) is for 153 tooth Flywheel. The starter casting with bolts offset from a right angle to the crank is for the 168 tooth flywheel.

Also starting in 1962 the bellhousings are die cast aluminum -- the 4-11/16" bore was most common. There were some 1962-1971 aluminum bellhousings that were used with light duty transmissions. These had a 4-3/16" bore and were used with 153 tooth Flywheels. The 168 tooth flywheel will not fit in these bellhousings.

A few items on this thread on parts. It wasn`t until 65 that Vettes used a 11 in clutch assembly most of the time with the 396/427`s. All before this year used a 10.0 or a 10.4 Borg and Beck assembly. 61-62 used an aluminum bellhousing that the starter bolted directly to it with 3 bolts. 1960 and earlier had the same starter but use a cast iron bellhousing. 1963 was the first year that the starter bolted directly to the block. But there is a lightweight 10.4 flywheel with a 12-3/4 diameter with 153 teeth used on L88`s that will fit all internally balanced engines. The smaller diameter was used to help develope the high RPM`s available with true L88`s. This is GM # 14085720. A similar one for the external balanced engines {454} is also available.

Vig,

Glad you are back and hope all is well, and settled in your favor!

Bob

You need a 12-3/4" diameter 153-tooth flywheel - used on all small-blocks from '63-'72, with a 10.5" clutch.

Welcome back VIG

My 65 (Not numbers matching) has an 11" flywheel.

Welcome back again:D

Vigman,
Welcome back. I'm not trying to hijack your thread but can someone tell me a good aluminum flywheel to use on my 63. I've got a 10.5" Centerforce clutch hooked up to a Keisler 5 speed.

Thanks and sorry to butt in but I thought the two were related.
Sal

Ok well it looks like I have the wrong one!

The Pimp mobile is running fine..... and the project engine is still sitting in the garage.. well now it's back in search of the flywheel.. I bought the wrong one and it's cleaned, surfaced & ready to go.... but no fitty in the correct bellhousing.. any one need a good used flywheel?

The court thing is resolved.. so now .. slowly.. were starting back up in toy mode.

You could use the 15 lb. L88 flywheel GM #14085720 with the ID #3879623. designed specifically for the L88 10.4 clutch assembly. A very good choice as its the lightwight nodular iron internally balanced unit that reduces an engines rotationg inertia and quickens throttle response. Also being iron, it can always be easily resurfaced as opposed to the aluminum flywheels that have a insert in them for the disc face. Oh, they will fit small blocks too from 1955 to 1985.

Thank you IRONCROSS. You don't happen to know the cost do you? Is it the smaller tooth number so it will work will my starter?
Thanks again

The flywheel is has 153 teeth. You could probably check GM Performance parts right over the Net for a price.
